Sigurdson offside on the goal for Everton but VAR doesnât pick it up. Embarrassing week for VAR, messed up today, in the Newcastle game, Palace game and Bournemouth game.
No wonder Mr VAR across the water is quiet today.
The Everton incident is not offside. The Villa incident is not a VAR issue. The Newcastle incident is an error, the first factual error of the season. It was not picked up until after play resumed, so nothing could be done.
Watching MOTD from last night - what's the point in VAR if we're not sending Tielemans off for that potential ankle breaker or giving Villa that last minute equaliser?
Utter shambles really.
We've seen similiar tackles get yellows before. VVD v Napoli last year comes to mind. He got suspended for the next game as a result. Unlike Ancelotti, I don't think any of us thought it was more than that. As usual with VAR, when it intervenes, people say it ruins the game and when it doesn't intervene, they ask what's the point? Under Riley's VAR, they're not going to intervene in subjective cases, and that was a subjective case.
So far, it's worked well imo. While it's not got involved in enough subjective decisions for my liking, it's overturned almost all the factually wrong decisions it has had to, but not slowed the game down to the WWC long delays the sceptics were forecasting. It is also the main reason why we're still top of the league, after ruling out the City ghost goal v Spurs. Without that decision, we're not top. So I'm happy enough with VAR so far.
