This is one of the biggest chokes we’ve seen in recent times. When you think of the money they’ve spent and the evolution we’re led to believe has taken place under dear old Ole and you look at the last couple of years, they actually have less to show for it than under their two previous managers, the last of whom got torn to shreds and rightly so.
Tonight we saw what it looks like to have all the money in the world and yet nothing of the courage and leadership needed to overcome even a European minnow like Villarreal, who, for all their pluck and resolve, offered largely nothing in attack the whole game.
Devoid of ideas and rudderless from the manager down, the Munts simply allowed the game to pass them by. As the clock ticked down the stark contrast in each team’s attitude was there for all to see. For Villarreal it was the biggest game of their lives; for the Munts another chance to feign progress and success on a European stage. It was a truly pathetic display which epitomised the true character of this soulless club.
