I think your right. Can't get my head round Southgate giving a 19 year old the last penalty, why didn't Grealish take it/one
Astounding. There were numerous critical junctures in that match where Southgate should have acted but failed to. You could say 10-15 minutes into the second half where Italy were dominating possession and England were creating nothing. Did nothing. Then later on when Hendo comes in and implements some control. He could have built on that control by sending Rashford or Sancho on then. Didn't.
And then the penalties. Takes Hendo off who would have taken a penalty. Puts two kids up, with one taking the all important 5th. No Grealish, no Hendo, no Shaw even.
I get he's been given a heroes reception the last week or so but tonight was a string of errors. Up against a top manager like Mancini (as we all know) the contrast was stark.
Italy deserved it as they were the much better side but Mancini didn't have to do much thinking as Southgate's passivity did much of the job for him.
