Fatal almost to get injured here. One minute your the man, next minute yer out for 3 months and they've signed another forward..Jota must be thinking 'how will I get back in now'.

Joking aside, the signing of Gakpo has got me worried about the prognosis for Jota and, even more so, Diaz. If those 2 are both expected back fit in a couple of months, would FSG (or Jürgen) splurge £40m on another left winger? I was thinking Gakpo could play anywhere across the front 3, so could be cover for 3 positions but, reading up on him, the consensus seems to be he needs to play on the left.

I think established goal scoring players like Jotta will get back in when we rotate to rest players, as long as he stays fit after his return. Same for Diaz as well

Well 3 months could equate to 30 games in all comps. A long time to be without forward cover.

Makes sense if true, why else would you buy him considering the weakest part of the team is now in midfield.

Not having a pop at him, but as established as he is I don' think he's scored a league goal since about March?

Even if they are both back in two months that's still a lot of game time missed and our season could be over by then. I think the injuries have brought forward our plans to recruit an attacker, kind of how Spurs' interest in Diaz brought that forward to last January.

Diaz and Gakpo for the left
Nunez and Jota down the middle
Salah and Doak for the right

Maybe a bit light on the right side but that's the way it's looking for the future (think Bobby leaves on a free in the summer).

With no sign of Diaz or Jota coming off the sick anytime soon, signing a decent promising left sided player makes sense. We just can't afford to hobble along. Darwin is better suited playing central. Cody gives him that berth.

Plucking Arthur Melo from relative obscurity didn't solve anything. Not sure a fit Melo would've made any difference. The ageing midfield is still an issue. Might have to wait till summer to solve that, what with the ins and outs, probably needs a major overhaul.

..not to mention poor old Carvalho....scores a niffty goal against City..then gets hooked at half time..no place against Villa and now he's up against this Gakpo....scorer of 3 in the World Cup...bout 4/5 in front of him when they're all fit...poor kid..

With our injury record we need 3 players for every position.

A point of concern is that finances are still taking priority over vital team requirements!

The midfield is a case in point when any other top flight club would have given the ageing Henderson much lighter duties and brought in a replacement long before now.

Of course a quality midfielder would cost much more than the £40m paid for Gakpo but the increasing injuries suffered by Henderson already impact on the team's performance and as stated a suitable replacement would negate the issue.

In the longer term our faithful servant would retain his invaluable service while his replacement was honed to perfection.
As stated the financial priorities once again act to the team's detriment..

Makes sense to move the signing forward if Firmino is leaving at the end of the season and Diaz and Jota are both out for a few months.
Gets quality in the door right now and gives two options for each position when everyone is back.

Looked like a hip issue but I am more worried about Elliott. Hope his ankle is fine just a knock.

      Quote
On the knocks sustained by Elliott and Robertson during the game...

Funnily enough, Harvey, before the game, injured Robbo a little bit. In our warm-up game, he hit him with a knee at the hip, so it was a dead leg. He could play but then at one point the muscle closed and he couldn’t play on. Harvey got a knock, which was quite painful, but when you see the situation because it is clear that’s painful, but that’s it, I think.

Anyone have any word on Elliott? Is he fit for this evening at Brentford?
