Royal Standard de Liège, usually referred to as Standard de Liège, is a Belgian football club from the city of Liège. They are the current champions of Belgium.

They won the belgian title for the first time in 25 years last season.

I think we should be able to beat them.

We are away first too which is good.

I agree, you are more class than them, but it's not time to relax and take them as an very easy rivals.
As a commentator of Eurosport said Liverpool liked to play nerves of their fans in such matches with easy rivals.

However, no need to worry a lot, because Atletico and Schalke were less lucky to play now in 3rd round.

We should come through this match, Standard have not won the Belgian League for 25 years until last season, and Anderlect who are very successful are one of the whipping boys of the CL. (fingers crossed)

Personally I don't think we'll have too many problems. As long as we don't piss around and play professionally we should be in the group stages. See you all in Rome :)

If it's in Europe, it's not going to be a long flight is it? Unless it is a stupid flight, where it does stopovers around the world and then lands in Belgium.

I'm from belgium and i can say that they aren't that bad, but normally they can't bring us into troubles.
They have 1 very good player, Fellaini, he's a central midfielder.

Liege is French-speaking town of Belgium.
Standard stadium is called Stade Maurice Dufrasne. It has four stands: 9.033 places (1st), 7.336 places (2nd),  6.887 places (3rd), 6.767 places (4th).
Their stadium is also called "L'enfer de Sclessin' (The hell of Sclessin) or "Chaudron de Sclessin" because it's well-known for the passion of their fans.

A part of Russia is in Europe too (East Europe), but Belgium is near France (it's West Europe). So it's easier to get to them. I think Bpatel meant West Europe.

Not a bad team from what I've read about them, beat Anderlecht to become champions last season so can't be all that bad.  I think they will give us a game but we should win comfortably  ;)

Hehehe, so true!!! I was going to Montreal, and I believe I visited every F***ing airport in Europe before they decided to cross the Atlantic.

      Good draw, should be ok.

Hey, greetings from Belgium, I joined this forum to give some info on standard Liege (although I'm not a fan of the club)
Of course Belgium is "not that far" we are practically neighbours, you can see the English coast from the Belgian coast on a day with clear skies. London-Brussels is under 2 hours with the eurostar.

They were the deserved champions in Belgium last year, and they have a very young team, the captain Steven Defour is only 19 years old. However some of the best young players in the team will be playing in the Beijing Olympics since they were part of the Belgian under 21 team that reached the semi-finals of the european -21 cup last year, so the team will be weakened by that. They play in the Sclessin stadium, which holds 30,000 people and their fans are considered some of the most loyal fans of Belgium, even by other teams. Liege is a city that is about 45 minutes train ride from Brussels. There are direct trains to Liege from all the Brussels train stations including the one at Brussels airport.

Of course Liverpool should easily win this game. I would say there is definitely some talent in this team, but obviously not as much as Liverpool and most players are young and unexperienced.

      Hope that helps!

Welcome cedflanders and hello. A draw that will test us I don't go along with this being an easy draw as I've seen to many teams fall because they took the opposition lightly. Rafa will prepare the players with his usual eye for detail and he wont be taking Standard lightly and I do not believe the team shall be over confident, on paper their should be only one winner but we don't play football on paper but I do expect us to win and win both tie's but as they say football's a funny old game...

Should win but good to get abit of a challenge before we progress.

Interesting match this, Schalke v Atletico. Always one of them in the draw where they are evenly matched.

Staying on topic though, i've heard about Defour. He seems a great player who will get even better. Just play our game and we should win.
