      Phone Scams
      Jan 30, 2013 01:03:12 pm
I just had someone ring me, telling me there was a security issue with my PC.

Obviously I told them to F**k off, but I was thinking it might be an idea to have a thread for these scams and others.

Good idea Swab.  These scammers are very sneaky.

I keep getting (every couple of months or so) text messages telling me I have an appointment at the Royal London Hospital when I live nowhere near London and have, touch wood, no health problems.

I never reply as I'm guessing they're fishing for confirmation the number is active so they can then bombard me with all sorts of things.

My lad thinks it was this one:
      http://www.informationweek.com/security/management/microsoft-windows-support-call-scams-7-f/240005023

I never touch anything in it that I don't know about, which in my case means just about everything ;D
My lad sorts out any PC or laptop issues we have, because he's qualified to do it.

I always work on the premise that Windows Support etc do not contact you by phone and they state as much themselves, on that proposition anyone phoning alluding to the fact they represent Windows, Microsoft are F***ing lying and treat them as such.

Exactly what my lad said Stuey.

Might take a leaf out of your book and have a bit of fun with them if they call again.

Speaking of phone scams, my university called me up last night asking for a donation. Wasn't the four years of vastly overpriced tuition enough?

If I get any phone calls like that I usually say that they are speaking to the local police station and can they tell me what the problem is,they soon hang up.Or another good one is to tell them that you do not have a computer.

Yep, that's the way to do it. I had a poor Indian lad trying to scam me one evening and when I told him I didn't have email or a computer he was completely dumbfounded as to where to go next. ;D
