I have to disagree.
First, shutting the mouth of an Everton fan is always a plus in my book.
Second I think people misinterpreted his words. To me, it doesn't sound as if he said "I'm happy to be on the bench since I get rich by doing nothing". More like "Even if I were sh*t, then you are sitting on a chair, I'm sitting on a bench, the difference between us is that I get rich by doing the same as you pay money to be allowed to do. So who are you to insult me?".
Also, I think people a quite sensitive on the money issue. Why don't people slate Gerrard for being the highest paid player at the club? If he loves the club so much, why doesn't he help the club by asking for much less? Money is just part of the game, players try to earn for the rest of their lives, and honestly, you cant blame them. Many gave up education to focus on football. When their career is over, there are not very many options for them.
Third, not being played is not the fault of Pennant IMO. Still being at the club is not his fault either I think. He was bought in at the same time as Kuyt, who Rafa seems to favouring on the right wing. When he has been given a run of a few matches in the side, he has done well. He always seems to fight for his place, and never complains in the press about not getting matches. And that takes some kind of a man. Imagine how frustrating it must have been to be on the bench (or even not in the team) when Kuyt was in poor form, ineffective for the team, and the team desperately needed width, and he was the only out-and-out winger at the club.
At the last day of the transfer window there were stories that Rafa had given him an ultimatum. Leave for Stoke or play for the reserves all season. If true, I honestly don't blame him for staying. He is way to good to go to Stoke, and be given that choice on deadline day is not fair. There had been rumors earlier about Blackburn being interested, so why wasn't a deal made with them? Also, if Rafa wanted to sell him, then why did he not play him in the last two games of last season? He had played wonderfull games against Fulham and Birmingham (35. and 36. game of the season) and for the last two games, fourth place was already secured. Why didn't he give Pennant the opportunity to shine in those two games, so that more middle-table clubs would show interest in him over the summer?
IMO Pennant is not to blame in his current situation.
I feel he would be better concentrating on his football and getting into the team.
And I don't think Pennant will lose any concentration on his football because he says 4 words to an Everton fan during his warm up.
