U2 wrote a lot of songs on suffering and politics in the 80s like Sunday Bloody Sunday, New Years Day but perhaps none of them as hard hitting as this one. The 'Mothers of the Disappeared' are those mums who saw their children taken and killed by the military dictatorships that ruled most prominently in Argentina (title inspired by the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo) and Chile in the 70s and 80s for daring to oppose their horrible regimes. It should be one of their most well known songs but it isn't. Amazing song to finish off an amazing album!

      That's great.
Today (March 22) some fascists went to the streets to celebrate (yes, celebrate) the coup that put in place a military dictatorship in Brazil 50 years ago, in 1964.
Thankfully there weren't many of them, and they're generally being ridiculed by the people and the media. Still, it's scary to think of people actually celebrating it.
Chile and Argentina probably saw even worse dictatorships.

Getting the need for something fresh and I'm just not getting it from anywhere.

Liking these lads and I am hoping I will like more of their stuff when I get to hear it.

Liverpool four piece who have only been around for about a year and sounding quite early Noughties Indie. Zane Lowe from Radio One is a fan and he knows a bit about new groups.

Nothing new doing anything for me lately.
I've resorted to downloading missing CDs and generally filling in my music collection.

I don't think I'm going to find anything listening to radio anyway.

      Agree.

As you can see from here the last thing I listened to was The Cranberries No Need To Argue album and just flicking through some Ian Brown solo stuff tonight.

Apart from new albums from The National, Gaslight and Sigur Ros I haven't bought any new stuff in ages.

Ian Brown - Just Like You (A.D.I.D.A.S.)

Awesome song live and he enjoyed it so much when he was in Belfast he played it again straight after. :D

You don't hear too much of their early stuff, even in the last live tour, but it's a good song.

Boxer is the album for me although it's hard to decide on their best and depends on my mood at times.

      The National - Squalor Victoria

      Bryan Devendorf's album is Boxer.

      He's a great drummer.

Unbelieveable live and worth catching if you get the chance mate.

My favourite from the last album.

      Yep.

You got me started again on The National tonight when I've been trying to listen to other stuff. ;D

Don't mind though as I said I can't get enough of them and it was yourself and BR who got me into them a good few years back now.

The opener of Trouble Will Find Me is another great song. Love the time signature and the lyric which is apparently about Matt's younger brother and how he missed him when he left home.

      We are.

And as much as I love Boxer the quality of High Violet is ridiculous. You've just picked one of my favourites.

      Closes perfectly.

The National - Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks

They're back in Dublin in July and I'm sorely tempted to go and see them again even if it means I miss Arcade Fire. Big dilemma.
