he is a very talented player and would be great at chavs or Real but I just don't think we need him. Not the type of player we need....we don't need a 'jack of all trades' but a master of one.....namely a right winger.  Steve finnan is quality week in week out and doesn't deserve to be replaced......and if we were to sign him the  money it would cost! Put that money towards Tevez and a winger...let the chavs roll on to bankruptcy

uummm im not convinced to be honest, i think he could do a great job but he is neither a winger or a right back, i think finnan is one of the best right backs around so that leaves him in right midfield and i think there are better out there silva, mancini, malouda where they are more specialised in the winger positions !?

      we'll see anyway !

I personally would still like to go for Alves, as long as the price wasn't extortionate. People have identified that he doesn't seem to be a right back or winger, and I'd agree. His ideal position is wingback, a position we don't have anyone for on the right as Finnans legs just aren't up to all that running anymore.

We saw Rafa use three at the back very successfully on a few occasions last season, I personally wouldn't mind it being used a bit more this season, also solving our central midfield dilemma. A lineup like this would be perfect against certain opposition:

                       Reina

            Carra   Hyypia   Agger

      Alves                            Aurelio
                Masch      Alonso

                      Gerrard

                    Kuyt  Eto'o?

Hey eddieC, you hace a very good point there. All we need for that to work is another centreback to cover in case of injuries and hyypia's oldness.

Absolutely, if we were going to play that system we'd definately have to buy another centre back, something I feel we're probably going to do anyway.

not a bad formation but definitely think rafa will go for 2 out and out wingers to give us genuine pace, flair and goals from midfield.

Judging by Rafa's team selections so far, he doesn't seem to like going for two out & out wingers at the same time, preferring to have one winger & one 'side midfielder' so to speak. I think if we play a 4-2-3-1 we'll see two out & out wingers, but in a 4-4-2 he'll stick to the same approach.

As we all know Rafa likes to change the team & formation from game to game, and he has gone for three at the back on a few occasions, I feel currently we're lacking the player that can use the right wingback role to it's full potential, and Alves would be a good option.

with the chavs and others getting involved its going to get expensive.....which I think isn't going to prove Value For Money.....its going to have to be around 18mill.

He's good, but definately not worth paying that much for. £12m would be about the right price for him.

I wouldn't want a player who decided to go to the club who offers more wages! Definitive mark of a tw*t in my eyes! Money grabbing glory hunters, not interested in the club, the fans or trophies!

This brazillian should be a born red fan!  Lets have a recruitment agency for voluntary workers. If you want to play for the best team in history, you'll have to accept what we want to pay you or F*** off.

I fully agree with you sentiment but due to all the other tw*t clubs paying over the odds for ordinary players,  and ridiculously high wages, if we don't keep up with the trend we'll end up inthe Conference !!!!!

It was suppose to be a sarcastic remark!  Footballers have become very greedy and materialistic, they want the earn as much as physically possible, to be honest like most people in modern society!  Sentiment and loyalty  is something that is used as PR and portrayed, it doesn't really come from the heart.  Virtually every player in our squad if guaranteed a better wage and a better chance at lets say AC Milan or Barcelona would leave tommorrow and that is a fact!

I don't want him here, diving little tw*t.  Prime example to the downside of the La Liga.  He's worse than Cristiano Ronaldo.  Sorry, no fairys for me.

Worried about his guy, watched him play for Brazil a few times and he didn't have great games, his passing was all over the place, even sissoko could thread a ball better than him :)
