Torres: I feel like a Scouser
      1st Dec 2009 - Latest News

In just two short seasons Fernando Torres has smashed a collection of records, made the Kop bounce like never before and attained the kind of legendary status it takes most players years to enjoy.

So what's his secret - and how has he kept his feet on the ground since becoming one of the most lauded footballers on the planet?

Liverpoolfc.tv popped down to Anfield to get to know the man behind the headlines.

In this revealing interview, El Nino lifts the lid on his relationship with Stevie G, chats about how Evertonians treat him in the street and explains why he wants his little girl to have a Scouse accent.

You've lived in Liverpool two years now, Fernando - how much do you feel at home here?

I really feel at home here. From the first day I came right up until today I have felt that Anfield is my home. I feel like I am from Liverpool.

When people arrive in Liverpool they visit all the tourist attractions - the Albert Dock, The Cavern, the house where John Lennon grew up. Were you the same?

Yes, of course. I visited John Lennon's house and the Beatles museum and everywhere else like the cathedrals. In the first month I went around visiting all the important things in Liverpool with my friends. But the most important thing here is Anfield, and I can enjoy that every two weeks.

Where's your favourite place to go?

For me, Anfield is the best place in England but when I am with my family we normally go to the city centre. We like to have a walk along the Albert Dock, watching the docks and chatting to people. It's very nice to have the people recognise me and they always seem to have good words for me. They ask me things about Liverpool and about myself.

What are Evertonians like with you?

To be honest, I have to say thank-you to the Evertonian people as well because they also come and ask me things and talk to me in a really good way. When I was in Madrid, the Real Madrid fans didn't like me. But here the Everton fans are really friendly with me. I was surprised at first.

What does that say about the people of this city?

Yes, the people here are very different. In Madrid the people don't have as much respect for players. You can't do the things normal people do. But here people are very respectful of players away from the pitch. I can go to the supermarket, I can go for a drink anywhere. The quality of life here for me is much better because I can do everything I want. I am a normal person here. I can go for a walk along the beach or up to Formby. Every place I go I can act normally.

You seem to know a lot about Liverpool Football Club and its history. How did you go about learning that?

On the first day the club gave me books and DVDs. Plenty of them about the history. I am very proud to play for Liverpool because it is a club with a lot of history. I would like to be part of this history one day by winning trophies. The fans here have seen some of the best players in the world playing for Liverpool and now they sing my name, but I have only been here two years and I haven't won trophies, I've only scored some goals. I hope in a few years I can write another book explaining about the victories and trophies I've won at Liverpool.

How big a problem was the language barrier when you first arrived?

At the beginning it was difficult, but funny at the same time. I made some mistakes. I couldn't understand anything in restaurants and I couldn't read the bank letters or electricity and water bills. I didn't know if I'd paid or not, then I got more letters asking for money. The people at the club helped us, though.

How's your Scouse now - picked up any words?

Deffo! I am picking up words because a lot of people at the club are Scousers. It was difficult in the beginning but, more or less, I can understand them now.

You're a father now - do you see your little girl growing up here in Liverpool as a little Scouser?

I think so. Some of my teammates have kids and they speak with a strong Scouse accent. I hope to be here for a long time and if my daughter speaks English and Scouse, I will be proud.

      Has fatherhood changed you?

Yes, a little bit - I cannot rest properly anymore! No, I can. I have a really nice baby and I can sleep. But I have more responsibilities now and you start to think about things in a different way. You have a wife and a daughter, so you're not a kid anymore. You have to think about the future of your family.

Do you get involved in the dirty work like nappy changing and getting up in the night?

Yes, of course. From the first day. It's something you have to enjoy. I help a lot and I want to keep enjoying that.

So, you and your family are at home on a Saturday night - what's on TV in the Torres household?

It's normally football. Also the news - sports news. It is easier for me to understand the TV if it's about sports.

You are a global superstar now but do you still see your old mates - the people you grew up with?

Yes. I have friends over almost every weekend, and they're the same friends I had as a kid. This is the main thing - keeping your friends and family close to you. They keep your feet on the ground. When we are alone they tell me I am the same as I was before, and I have to thank them because they always help and support me.

We know all about you and Steven Gerrard on the pitch - tell us about your relationship off it?

It's a really professional relationship. I know Stevie is one of the best players in the world and it's a difficult life for him sometimes because everyone knows him and it's difficult to go to restaurants and things like that. He is a fantastic teammate - always aware of the other players and asking if we need anything. It's amazing to see a player like him having the same quality as a person. He is a fantastic captain.

You've achieved so much in your two years here - do you still get the same buzz when you score a goal or see the fans bouncing?

For me, it's amazing to score at Anfield and amazing to score in front of the Kop. When I hear people sing my name it's the best feeling I can have on the pitch. Maybe it's better than when I score a goal. I hope to hear my song a lot more in the future.

Do you ever think about what you'll do after football?

No, I don't know yet. I'm trying to enjoy my career and I have plenty of years to play football yet. Maybe in eight, nine, 10 years I will have to think about the future, but not now.

Everyone hopes you'll be here a long time yet - but how would you ultimately like to be remembered by Liverpool fans?

I would like to be remembered as a player who won trophies for Liverpool. I have plenty of years here, I am sure about that, and I hope the trophies will come soon.

      I'm sorry but that's crap.

His comments are him taking the lead and showing the way for his fellow players as to what it means to play for this club. We don't sign a player like him every summer when time and again he will come out and underline his commitment for the club. Of course he wants to achieve something for the club and himself, we haven't been doing that for a long time. It's evident he wants to bring the glory back to Anfield.

Lots of players (including our club) play for the money and not for the shirt. They need no naming, sometimes you can probably see it for yourself as well. The money is good, especially at a club as huge as Liverpool. I can only probably say that Gerrard, Carragher, Torres play for the shirt, they sweat tears and blood and are willing to fight for the honour and glory of Liverpool Football Club.

With him coming out and making comments like this it's very pleasant. He shows the way for fellow players, he understands the Liverpool way and with players like him the spirit among the players can only get stronger. He inspires other players to follow in his footsteps, and with his words it speaks great volumes of what the man is. A living legend.

His injury problems come for Spain, don't blame the lad blame Spain. They've got to sort him out and protect him. Everytime we send the lad out to represent his nation he comes back with an injury. But still, I dare say even a 30% fit Torres is better than most 100% fit strikers on any day. He can be out of the game for 89 minutes and score that crucial goal that wins it for us. He's a matchwinner, he's the best striker on the world and that's how important he is for us.

I dunno about that, too close a call. What I know is that Gerrard and Carra are a given, they're Scousers, and now Torres says he's a Scouser, so okay, we've got 3 now. Think Rafa as well seeing how much he wants to fight for the club.

All of the three you mentioned love the club to bits but I don't know if they would go to such an extent for the club, honestly. I know Riise still keeps in constant contact with Rafa.

I appreciate the sentiment but it seems that every week he's making some comment about what he 'wants to do.'
I'd rather see him concentrate on playing some football, as it's been too rare a sight over the past 18 months

When's your next flight back to fantasy land?

      I'm sorry but that's crap.

His comments are him taking the lead and showing the way for his fellow players as to what it means to play for this club. We don't sign a player like him every summer when time and again he will come out and underline his commitment for the club. He is one of them players who we haven't had many of, the ones who really want to fulfill the expectations of us lot, him stevie and gerrard are for sure the ones that give their life to liverpool. He was one of the best buys we've ever done without a doubt.

      I think it's valid.
IMO he should get his head down and get on with it - if this comment was in isolation then fair enough, but its every week he's coming out with some grand statement - anyway Ronaldo said the same things at Utd; I take this loyalty talk with a pinch of salt - btw - Steven Gerrard plays for the shirt? If he didn't get his pay-rise in 2005 and then again in 2006 he'd have been off like a shot

The facts are completely different to your assertions, Gerrard has stated unequivocally that there is only one club he wishes to play for and he could take his undoubted talents to any of Europe's elite tomorrow if he was inclined indeed there would be a manic stampede to sign him if there was the merest suggestion that he was unhappy at his dream club.
He is paid for his obvious genius input into the team and although he could go elsewhere and be handsomely rewarded the fact that he remains at Anfield indicates that contrary to your claims he is not a mercenary and plays for the city of his birth.

As I said - if Liverpool didn't give Gerrard a massive pay-rise in 2005 he was gone - even despite the club smashing their wage structure he almost went and then repeated the whole saga a year later only for it to be ended by - you guessed it, a new contract.
So feel free to extol his vitrues on the playing front but dont present him as a beacon of loyalty and morality because he comes up short on both counts

What don't you understand about the previous posts? Gerrard could go ANYWHERE on the planet and command a higher wage than he gets at Anfield and there was plenty of media bollocks about the supposed move speculation as there IS only negative reporting of events concerning this club.
No one puts him up as a beacon for anything he plays for the club he loves end of,as for the morality aspect of things I really have no idea where you're going with that one-but here's a point to ponder do you think it's morally justified coming on to a supporters site when you plainly do not meet the criteria?

Not valid. Get his head down?! He's been F***ing injured for gods sake! No offense but your whole post stinks of ignorance. Torres may look like he isn't doing much out there at times, but he is always just waiting for the right opportunity. And he takes them most often. I think him talking of his love of the city is fantastic, and something we don't see from modern players to often. I really cannot believe that you believe what you wrote.

And on Gerrard, read his book! He states his reasons very clearly. He thought the club didn't really want him, and was very very torn. What would you do if your club was showing little interest, at least from what he sees? Regardless of who you support, if you feel unloved you would feel the same as he did. Money was part of it yes, but it always is. He was our best at the time, and if the club is showing little interest in a decent contract then I would feel the same.

So get off your high horse, don't wanna see another ignorant post like that.

Steven Gerrard said he never wanted to leave but he only thought leaving because he thought the club wanted money more than him. If a club is constantly stalling on your contract and news about you being sold arise everyday, you can't help but think 'Why aren't they offering a contract suitable for a player of my calibre?'. Anyone would feel the same.

You cant just make up passion like that.  I really think he's sincere about loving Liverpool Football and the Community. He seems involved in the community, he goes to restaurants and is not harassed, he can take his kid with him on the streets and not worry.  Thats what players want. I dont care what they say, They may want money and good contracts and Cups, but they want to feel connected to the team and area.  If anything, that can bring in the big names.

The majority of people on this forum, I assume, are from Liverpool or surrounding areas. Now, I am an outsider and have been on here and had conversations with people who are straight up good dudes. I have yet to come across any real pricks or people who are rude to non "Scouse".
I have heard from friends who lived and visited the UK that it can be a very closed, locals only, mentality in a lot of areas and they all say Liverpool is a GREAT town with really good people.  One friend lived in Liverpool for 2 years and said it was the best city he ever lived in and he lived in Rome and New York. So thats got to say something.  He had cool neighbors who helped him adjust to living in Liverpool, helped him with moving in his furniiture on his first day in England and even invited him to parties after living their a week.  If I had to move to the UK, Liverpool would certainly be first on my list.

We saw what Manchester did to Beckham. The constant pressure, tabloid sh*t, attacking his family and personal issues,  Manchester pushed their own home-grown, superstar out of town and for what.

He mentioned in his book that he just wants to get paid what midfielders like him should get. He stated he isn't a money grabbing c*nt but he just wants what it is at it's going rate.

Exactly. There is constructive criticism/argument. And then there is complete, contrived crap that just stinks of winding up. And coming on to a topic dedicated to how much Torres has come to love Liverpool, and us him, and criticize his work rate and his loyalty is pretty stupid i think.

And the Gerrard thing is way off too. He needs to do some research before he comes on here and starts sprouting crap about our two greatest players of recent times.

Ita a proven fact that the community and press are VERY influential in the players lives.  You can see that superstar players are affected by articles, blogs, forums, citizens in the communities, how people treat him when he is out with family and friends.  Torres has certainly been adopted by Liverpool and its fans. He even made a point that Everton supporters are good to him.  I think that goes a long way into showing the mentality of the Liverpool people and what they think of those who respect their town and community.

I dont see the same for players at Chelsea or Man U.  Certain teams dont consider "Family" as a factor in keeping and signing players.  Their are towns and communities that respect their players and treat them as normal people. I think beside the people of Liverpool, it seems that W. Ham and Pompey supporters are good to their players also. Which is just speculation from certain articles and things I've read about them, but it seems true.

I didn't criticize his work rate - my point essentially is that I would rather see him do his talking on the pitch - i dont think that is particuarly outlandish, because I think Torres COULD become one of the best strikers in the world, but as of today he is not as most importantly is not playing enough football but also hasn't won anything at club level

You can't blame him for not playing enough football. He didn't plan to have those injuries and had even taken the options of pain killers so that he could get our season back on track. Injuries are something you can't avoid, especially when you're the best striker in the world, playing at the highest level.

At the start of the season, I felt he looked like he couldn't be bothered but as long as he's scoring goals every game or every other game, and the fact that he feels at home and loves us is just enough for me.

Why don't you start looking at the positives instead of harping on about the negatives?

You can't blame him for not playing enough football. He didn't plan to have those injuries and had even taken the options of pain killers so that he could get our season back on track. Injuries are something you can't avoid, especially when you're the best striker in the world, playing at the highest level.

At the start of the season, I felt he looked like he couldn't be bothered but as long as he's scoring goals every game or every other game, and the fact that he feels at home and loves us is just enough for me.

Why don't you start looking at the positives instead of harping on about the negatives?

      What positives?

      I knew you'd say that.
We've been unbeaten in 5 games.
We've won 2 games in a row, keeping clean sheets in the process.
      Steven Gerrard has been playing.
Fernando Torres is nearing return. Even though injured, he has scored goals.
David N'gog been doing his job brilliantly as cover to Nando.
      Daniel Agger has been playing.

I'll give you a positive my friend both players could command a fee of £50m EACH if they were sold and that is a conservative figure, so it seems that you're views cannot be taken seriously when people professionally qualified to assess athletic skills are willing to throw away serious dosh on "questionable talent".

Seriously - what is your issue?! You DID so criticize his work rate, go back and read! Why the hell are you so he'll bent on being a Johnny Bringdown? Winning something at club level is not the key to being a great striker, that's bullshit. By that logic you are saying Berbaflop and Tevez are better than Nando then eh?
Let's not forget he helped win Spain their first cup for a long time, with a world class winner goal too. That by your logic is a world class player, no?
And 10 goals this season isn't enough talking on the pitch, considering the injuries he has been having?

I eagerly await you're well thought out constructive reply ::)

Might be gettin the wrong end of the stick here but..........What show??

He was talking about the Shankly Show that was on at the Royal Court mate.

As for the last three posts - bait and take, come to mind lads.  :f_whistle:

You don't need to hear or read words from Torres to know he feels like a scouser. You only have to see how he plays for us to know this. And also, to see how he moans to the ref. All scousers do that.  ;)

Top man. Top player. Top Spanish Scouser.

What other strikers do you fancy over Torres? Please justify him NOT being one of the best in the world today??

Best Striker in the world. Liverpool sure is lucky to have him in the neighborhood. How I wish I lived there too. Too bad he's not playing against Blackburn... I feel like it's been too long since he played. No rush though, better healthy and fit than sorry.

I love Fernando. Even if he wasn't the best striker in the world, (but he is) i would want him to be our main man up front because of his heart and undying love for the club and city.

      Long live El Nino.

Let's not forget we are Reds before we are Scousers.Nowadayys, the club is run on a global basis,so all our Red brothers are equal unless you want to include the bitters supporters because they live within the city boundry?Get real, Scousers my arse,we are Redmen, some of whome are lucky enough to live close enough to try and get tickets to watch games. The rest of us have to rely on opportunites.
