      Liverpools greatest overseas player
      Feb 01, 2010 01:24:11 pm
Had a discussion in work today about Jan Molby. What a fantastic player he was for the club and as scouse as the Mersey now. Got me thinking who would be regarded as our best non uk/Irish player ever?

Some serious players in the early years from South Africa. More modern players Like Sami and Didi and of couse Brucie and Craig Johnson from the super 80s teams.

Can we organise a poll on this? Id love to see who people regard as our best foreigner

      Surprised nobody's said Xabi Alonso.

      Or Robbie Keane.

There has been enough crying about them two.   :f_whistle:

As a very light hearted view I remember back in the days back in the 60s and 70s when players from Scotland were regarded as foreign players... so I would put King Kenny and Ian St John up there with the very best !!
On a serious note it  would have to be the brilliant Jan Molby for me.

Ha Ha In fairness I was only replying with Barnes as his inclusion was being discussed UP THERE ^^ as he was born in Jamaica, but easily solved replace Barnes with Brucie for the same reason, they were winners of much silver ware.

My Dad used to tell me about a right winger who played for us,he was South African and he scored 74 goals in 239 games for us.He retired in 1947 so as you can see he lost out due to the second world war.he was selected to play for Great Britain twice so that should give you an indication of how good he was.His name was Berry Nieuwenhuys and the crowd called him Nivvy for short.
Molby on his day was brilliant,he could split a defence wide open with the accuracy of his passes and Sami showed us what skill and loyalty was all about.I would pick Sami because  he showed how good he was over 10 years but when I look at how good Nivvy was how could i not agree with my old mate my Dad.

Glad you mentioned him Billy. I think I mentioned we had some quality south Africans way back who were top players at the time

Reina - goalkeepers of his quality are hard to find. And his loyalty and commitment and passion for the club has never been in doubt.

So it's Pepe (and his baldy head) for me.

As much as I love Nando, could he go to Chester, get smashed, wind-up a load of shirt-lifters by getting his knob out and then tip over a load of cars before getting nicked!!

Big Jan for me, Sami then Didi.

No one going to mention Avi Cohen?

I'd go for Jan Molby or Sami. Leaning towards Sami because I saw a lot more of him.

Brucie-to come in and take over from clemance and to be so consistent and successful for so long. Reina's quick distribution that we all love is very much like Grobs. Such a huge character and strong presence in a team of leaders.
Jan-a beast to look at but a beauty on the ball. Always surprises me how long his career was at liverpool.
Sami-gave us a bedrock and class that we had missed since hansen's day.

Brian the title of the thread is Liverpools  greatest overseas player so I feel justified in putting this name in.It is Joe Louis the heavyweight boxing champion of the world at the time he signed for L.F.C. in 1944 as a player. He was in Liverpool visiting the American forces and someone thought it would be a good publicity stunt. As far as I know there was no other club able to sign him on as he was registered with us a player.
