I see Spirit of Shankly won today at Stratford.

Not sure if he's on during National week though.

      Keep an eye out.

Ok, done my swatting up on the Grand National (14th April) and these are my choices: Killyglen (took 33/1): Bred for this sort of race, lightly raced 10yr old who has been running over hurdles to keep his handicap mark down and now carries just 10st 4lbs some 6lbs lower than in last year's race (running on in 3rd place when fell 4 out). Would like to see him have a run before the national which would give me more confidence. I have had some small "saver bets" on Cappa Bleu, Arbor Supreme, West End Rocker and Roulez Cool. Anyone with something else they fancy?? P.S. I always bet on the national this early to get best value.

I like the look of Giles Cross, 25/1 big price.

atb1: I've stolen a big price (120/1 Betfair) on Quiscover Fontaine and strengthened it again @ 40/1 with some of my winnings from Cabal (ta for that again).

If things pan out - gets in on final declaration with the jockey I expect - it'll be 16/1 at best.   ;)

I was a bit surprised at how popular horse racing is in England! Most of the pubs near the hostel where I was staying in Liverpool basically only showed horses. Once I was looking for a place to watch the FA Cup, and had to walk a bit more because all I saw near me was horse racing :D

I think it has to do with betting, and how popular it is in the UK (so many betting houses!). Betting is illegal in Brazil nowadays so horse racing isn't popular at all.

Americain (yes, the European stayer who is now in Australia) will win the BMW Stakes.

Outstanding in the Australian Cup and currently 2/1 with Manighar and Shoot Out in the second line of betting.

Don't see them troubling him all too much after his first up run and how he gave Manighar a few kgs in the Melbourne Cup and still swamped him. Lucas Cranach out, Pinker Pinker doubtful, Green Moon out, Illo butchered last start.

Could well come in to evens.

I do like the horse BBB but think it may need another year or two experience but good luck.

Thanks. It's a bet to nothing mate - I'll be able to lay my Betfair stake off at a considerably reduced price. I get the age thing but at the price it's a no-brainer.

Won 500£ 2 days back on Broughtons Bandit and Wicked Wench. Would have been on for another 200£ if only the 4/9 favourite at Kempton today had done his job! :(

This is the one aspect of the National that greatly upsets me, it's a wonderful spectacle for all to see, but so upsetting when horses have to be put down  :(

On a lighter note, I chose second and third placed horses.

A brilliant race, I'm delighted for Neptune Colognes, a great guttsy horse, always a trier. And for Daryl Jacob, as great as it must be riding for Paul Nicholls you don't get too many breaks when you're behind Ruby Walsh. You could what it meant to the lad, well deserved.

It is sad what happened to Synchronised and According To Pete but unfortunately that is the nature of the sport. Every precaution is taken to ensure the safety of horses and jockeys but you can never fully eliminate the risk involved.

Frankel is without a doubt the best horse I have ever seen on the flat. Made Excelebration ( a very very good horse) look like a riding school pony today!

Black Caviar in Austrailia is another amazing filly. A shame we'll never see the two go against each other.

Great win for Camelot and Aidan and Joseph O'Brien in the Derby today.

On for the Triple Crown now (2,000 Guineas, Epsom Derby and the St. Ledger), if he does it he'll be the first horse since Nijinsky to win in in 1970. Also talk of him going up against Frankel but that would be ridiculous! He can't beat him, it would just ruin his reputation. Yet win the Triple Crown and he goes down in history!

      Frankel!!!

First time at a mile and two furlongs. Had a terrible start, went up against St. Nicholas Abbey, his toughest test to date, and won it so easily.

He has one more race and he'll be retired, can't see him being beaten so he should be retired as unbeaten.

13 straight wins is phenomenal! Take it in, we may never see one like him again!

Best horse I've ever seen on the flat, could easily be the best there has ever been. Think he only just stayed that trip today in the ground but still immense.

Can't imagine the price you'd have to pay in stud fees with that beast.
