Olympiakos move in to sign Liverpool FC defender Fabio Aurelio
      Apr 14, 2010 10:26:54 am

OLYMPIAKOS make a move for Liverpool left-back Fabio Aurelio.

The Brazilian is out of contract this summer and the Greek Super League outfit are hoping to snap him up on a free transfer.

They have informed the 30-year-old’s agent of their interest and are waiting for a response.

Aurelio’s injury woes this season have halted any talks regarding a new deal at Anfield and it’s unclear whether he will be offered the chance to stay.

He has been limited to just 13 starts and 10 substitute appearances during a campaign which has seen Emiliano Insua establish himself as first choice left-back.

Aurelio missed the start of the campaign after hurting his knee playing football with his family on the beach back home in Brazil and he’s currently sidelined with a thigh problem he suffered in the win against Blackburn at the end of February.

Manager Rafa Benitez hopes he will return to training next week and play again before the end of the season but he is running out of time to earn a fresh contract.

Aurelio has been beset by problems since Benitez signed him from his old club Valencia on a free transfer in July 2006.

The defender, who won two La Liga titles and the UEFA Cup under Benitez in Spain, ruptured his Achilles in the Reds’ Champions League quarter-final against PSV Eindhoven and was forced to sit out the 2007 final against AC Milan in Athens.

Aurelio enjoyed his best spell at the club last season starting 27 games, but his season has been another major disappointment.

In total Aurelio has scored four goals in 110 appearances for the Reds in four years.

no great loss really, but would prefer to get rid of insua rather then aurelio. fit aurelio is better then a fit insua.

I'd love to keep him if it was a pay as you play deal but I'm pretty sure he's already rejected that offer.

Bummed for him. Near best left back in the league when fit but that's very rare.

      Probably should let him go.

Pay per games ratio i would keep him ,long contract no way been far too costly for the club in terms of wages per game ,a far better player than Insua mind when fit ,which is not very often would like to know if he has ever been fit five games in a row for us.

Shame that his knee has gone.  He was a great servant for Rafa at Valencia, and showed (when he was fit) that he could do a great job for us.

But footballers need their knees, and Fab's have gone.

Its annoying because I really like Aurelio, but his injuries are just ridiculous. Its a shame, but I would consider letter him go for a more injury free replacement

Was pretty much on the cards with his Kewellesque performances over years.

One of our better players last year when fit. Possibly overlooked as a reason we underachieved this year. Classy player shame we didn't see more of him.

Probably going to happen, this one.

Can't see us extending his contract when he plays so little.

Just hope to F**k we'll have some money to replace him. He's a quality player when fit, we need someone solid and reliable, Insua isn't there yet.

Its as shame as his isa classy player but too many injuries and can't be relied upon.  Insua may also be on his way out to Spain!
Hope this £50 stretches to quality replacements and wingers etc.ha!!

Brilliant left-back. Really like him as a player.

However, injuries are a real problem and we're lucky if Fabio plays. For that reason, I'd say let him move.

      Unfortunately you're right.

Fabio has shown he can be a brilliant player, but his injuries are too much.

Shame to see him go, but far too injury prone. His free kick against united will stay in every reds mind forever!

Last season a fully fit Fabio proved himself to be one of the best left backs in the league, but the injuries have just become too frequent.

And he's 31 this year, so I understand why Rafa would leave him go.

Will be sad to see him leave though.

Probably best for both parties if he does leave.

We do need to get a top left back in the summer though.

      Just a left-back would do!! No wing-backs, just a solid left-back.

A good servant for the club.

Shame we can't cash in on him.
