Jonjo Shelvey (Liverpool -> Swansea)

I think he's an attacking midfielder who'd play much the same role as Gerrard in Rafa's 4-2-3-1 formation. A future star according to the hype around him, and what he's achieved so far at Charlton is pretty impressive for such a young player. Looking forward to the development of this one.

He wasnt getting games at Charlton because they dint want him to get injured cos the deal would get scuppered. They need money so they dint want to take a risk with him

My mate is a season ticket holder at Charlton and this is what he said:

"he's got bags of potential - although he looks like uncle fester from the addams family !  we're not playing the right level for him to prosper...not scared of looking for the ball and knows where the back of the net is.....plays central midfield, or behind the striker"

Looks like one bright prospect although I've never seen him play.

Seeing him being labelled the new Steven Gerrard makes me sit up and take notice though - we need to find a player to replace Gerrard when he retires - but I'm pretty certain no other player can come quite close to matching what Gerrard has done for the Club.

Still positive though, new signing! Youngest player to play for Charlton, one of the brightest prospects outside the EPL and also rated highly on Sky Sports Scout.

Just have a feeling that he's going to be a very positive signing for us - right age to mature into yet another fine player.

LFC sign England youth ace

Charlton Athletic's England youth international Jonjo Shelvey will join Liverpool on May 10.

The 18-year-old has passed a medical and agreed personal terms after the two clubs yesterday agreed a fee. Liverpool will pay an initial £1.7m with further potential payments depending on domestic and international appearances.

Shelvey became Charlton's youngest player when he made his first-team debut against Barnsley at Oakwell in April 2008 at the age of just 16 years and 59 days. He is also the club's youngest FA Cup and league goalscorer.

He has made 48 appearances and scored eight goals for The Addicks and is an established England U17 international.   

Liverpool's Managing Director Christian Purslow said: "Jonjo is an exciting young England international. His signing is part of our long-term strategic recruitment plan and we all look forward to welcoming him to Melwood."

The two clubs are also in talks to develop a strategic partnership involving the development of players in both directions as a result of the transfer. 

Charlton Athletic plc chairman Richard Murray said: "It is with the greatest reluctance that we have accepted an offer for Jonjo from Liverpool.

"No club likes to lose such a talented prospect, but the overall package is one we couldn't refuse, and one which was very attarctive to Jonjo.

"Liverpool are going to develop him over the next few years to be a top player, and I can't think of a better place for him to go to."

Surely there must be future incentives though.

For example, another £1.5m if he makes a certain amount of appearances/becomes a full International etc.
