Liverpool Plot Surprise £9m Bid for Barcelona Attacker
Dutch sources believe that Liverpool will attempt to lure Ibrahim Afellay from Barcelona this summer, just months after he joined the the Catalan club. The Dutch international playmaker is said to be unhappy about his lack of first team chances and this has led to speculation that the former PSV Eindhoven man may be interested in a swift Nou Camp exit.
Having seen Alexander Hleb stagnate at the club, the 24 year old is apparently keeping his options open and should an offer come in that Pep Guardiola is amenable to then Afellay may well leave the club he joined in January for a fee of £2m.
Liverpool were closely linked with Afellay as he drew toward the end of his PSV contract and in the end the attacking midfielder opted to move to Barcelona, knowing full well that it would be tough going for him to placate any member of the all conquering side.
Thus far Ibrahim Afellay has completed just 287 minutes of first team football and made just three starts, two of which came in the Copa Del Rey. Liverpool Director of Football Damien Comolli is known to be a big admirer of the Utrecht born attacker and indeed tried to sign the player when he was employed by Tottenham.
Sources state that an offer of around £9m may sway Barcelona into considering a sale of a player who they got ‘on the cheap’ due to the fact his PSV contract was due to come to an end in the summer.
