Unfortunately it does sound as though a new gearbox might be on the cards mate, we have a Honda which I opted for after assuring Liz that they were a reliable well built car. At 23k miles the clutch or geabox was making one hell of a noise and not changing as smoothly as usual, a good mate of mine works in a garage he stripped the box and told me it's the luck of the draw and sh*t does indeed happen but it was the gearbox that had taken the knock.
One component in the gearbox might suffer metal fatigue or have a flawed structure and if it fragments will cause massive damage to the rest of the mechanism, it could be a faulty bearing allowing movement within the mechanism and making a noise in the process.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings but forewarned is forearmed, that is just personal experience of course and I hope it is the less expensive option which is a clutch job.
