any car mechanics out there, HELP
      Jul 18, 2011 11:25:10 am
HI just a quick question to anyone ITK about cars. am a driving instructor with a 2007 fiat punto with 35k millage. i have had my car for about 4-5months and havent had any problems but yesterday after giving a lesson i have found its not going into gear as smoothly as it use to. before it would go into gear using just my little finger but now some times its really easy and other times i have to force it in. the reverse gear is the worst, it makes a grinding noise when i put it into gear. at 1st i thought it maybe a fault with the dual control, the pulley system not working properly but i dont think its that. am hoping my gear box/ clutch isnt on its way out.  anyone know what the problem might be?

      MANY THANKS

Daz is a mechanic but you could be awhile waiting on his response...

He wants to know if the noise goes when you press the clutch

It's a Fiat, there is your problem.

I've had 3, until I realised the error of my ways.

I can give you the number of a guy who specialises in Fiats if you're on the Wirral.

      Good Luck.

where his biting point is, at top of the pedal or bottom does noise go off when he presses the clutch when car is idling?

Sounds like clutch, if bite is at top of peddle and noise goes off when he presses clutch when idling its certainly clutch.

Unfortunately it does sound as though a new gearbox might be on the cards mate, we have a Honda which I opted for after assuring Liz that they were a reliable well built car. At 23k miles the clutch or geabox was making one hell of a noise and not changing as smoothly as usual, a good mate of mine works in a garage he stripped the box and told me it's the luck of the draw and sh*t does indeed happen but it was the gearbox that had taken the knock.
One component in the gearbox might suffer metal fatigue or have a flawed structure and if it fragments will cause massive damage to the rest of the mechanism, it could be a faulty bearing allowing movement within the mechanism and making a noise in the process.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings but forewarned is forearmed, that is just personal experience of course and I hope it is the less expensive option which is a clutch job.

      Typing, the new talking.

I had to buy a new keyboard for my laptop as the S was bust and I had to type with a lithp.

      Apologies for the poor comedy.

my biting point is at the bottom. when the car is in neutral or in gear it doesnt make any noise and it doesnt make any noise when am changing gear, its only when I want to put it into reverse. on normal gear change its ok some times and other time a bit stiff but no really noise.

thanks for the offer mate but am from south east uk so no where near wirral.

i have  got the new punto grande and before that i had the punto mark 1 and mark 2. i had those cars for 6 years and the only thing that i had to replace was a stater motor and a wiper motor. so in my experience fiat has been very reliable. i think fiat is more reliable now then in the past but cars like BMW and Mercedes are getting worse.

Doesn't sound as serious hearing those comments, I was getting flashbacks when I posted earlier.
