League cup: West Brom V Liverpool. 26/09/12 20:00
      Sep 24, 2012 04:48:10 pm
      Vs

From the heartbreak of yesterdays result and the news of Agger and Kelly now long term injured we move competitions on Wednesday witha league cup tie a way to West Brom.

Opening day defeat to them in the league, undeservedly, will be a spur for the team and fans going into the game. Obviously going in as defending champions but our record in recent years after winning the trophy is not great. And again this competiion must be seen as a chance to land a trophy.

Team selection will be interesting. Will the boss go all out or rest players, added to the injury woes, it could be an intersting line out.

      For me Id go

                       Reina

      Wisdom Coates Wilson Robinson

                  Sahin  Henderson
      Pacheco       Suso          Assaidi

                         Yesil

      1 nil reds

Sorry for only picking up this sentance from your OP Brian but I don't think winning a trophy is a priority this season.  I don't think it was last season, not to the owners anyway.

Your team selection probably isn't far off though.

Think Carra will take part to lend some experience to a young side.

                          Pepe
      Wisdom  Carra  Coates  Enrique
                    Sahin   Hendo
          Downing  Suso  Assiadi
                          Yesil

I think Suarez, Sterling, and Gerrard will all be kept on the bench just in case we need to put them on late to get a result.

A very difficult game at West Brom, especially after the weekend's game plus injuries, would go for a mixture of youth and experience and hope for a decent result.

Will West Brom field a reserve team? I think they'll go for a pretty strong team. Either way it's going to be a tough game. Steve Clarke is doing a great job there so far.

I think we may be looking to the cups again to provide us with some cheer and the players with some confidence. I think this is a game we can win comfortably without our best players and give some of the squad players who have seen little action some game time.

                                 Jones

      Wisdom       Carra     Coates   Enrique

                 Henderson  Sahin   Allen

         Assiadi       Morgan      Downing

I was at Anfield for the first time on Saturday, my brother got me a Hospitality Package for my 21st - What a first game at Anfield for me!

I thought Shelvey had that red card coming, he's lunged in many times before and making a challenge like that against Man. United is always going to get punished. Hopefully it will do him some good, he will come back a better, less aggressive player.

Hopefully we will see a mixture of Experience and Youth against WBA, we can't take them lightly by playing all the young lads.

I'd like to see this side:

      Reina

      Johnson
      Carragher (c)
      Coates
      Enrique

      Henderson
      Allen
      Sahin

      Sterling
      Suarez
      Suso

Subs; Jones, Wisdom, Skrtel, Robinson, Assaidi, Pacheco, Morgan.

Think it will be a tough game, but one we can win, I'm not going to try and guess the score as the team could be the opposite to what I think it will be.

      Good luck lads YNWA!

              Suso         Henderson    Sahin
                  Cole     Yesil      Assaidii

Well - this could not come at a worse time in my opinion with a few injuries and fixtuers coming thick and fast... However the cup is upon us and it's like take 2 for a start to the season!

We should go in with a half and half squad, would like to see us win this but a cup this term is the last thing on my mind - however if the boat steadies it's self then being in a cup / latter stages of a cup in Jan will be great. The debate for me is now about youth or first team starts for this game? If WBA put out a second string team we should turn them easily - regardless of who we field. Their depth is not as strong as ours and the gulf in class between second string and first 11 will become evident. What they lack in quality they will for sure make up for in pride and determination. So what do we field? Youth team to keep players fresh for the prem, or first team to get some much needed confidence back into the team - and more importantly goals!

West Brom will most likely go with a full strength side as they have a good chance to go a long way in this competition and with the way they are playing that will be a stern test. Steve Clark is a good bloke and has the players are on a great little run of results, so why upset the apple cart by chopping and changing? Perhaps keep the best team out there and go for it - if they knock us out then it will be a big boost for them, and the media will begin to circle like the vultuers they can be...

Personally - and for many reds we would write this comp off regardless of the prize for winning in return for some form in the league - but a season without any euro football will be a very long one. Part of me beleives it may be needed to allow us a real crack at getting 4th place. But as a fan, and as a realist we need the income so I would say go for it - full strength team and perhaps push a few players harder than we would like in order to drive some form into the team and get players used to the style we will now be playing.

2-1 to us, in a hard fought game that will now start the season for us again.

Might see a bit of a mixed lineup I think. Just a super early guess:

      Reina
      Carra        Coates
      Wisdom                           Downing
      Allen
      Hendo    Sahin
      Suso                       Assaidi
      Suarez

Bench: Jones; Skrtel, Johnson; Gerrard; Sterling, Yesil, Pacheco

I think Enrique mentioned on Twitter he was having a knee scan (in reply to Martin Kelly) so I'm gonna say he's knee is acting up and he can't play.

It's already been made clear the league is the priority (The FA should scrap this worthless cup) so I wouldn't be surprised to see the same line up as the one that faced Young Boys.

I am not worried what team we put out as long as we get revenge for our first league match this season.I feel confident with this game and will go for 3-1 to the MIGHTY REDS.

Agreed, we definatly deserve to give them a nice slice of payback. Just hope we dont get anymore injury's or redcards, we can really do without the sort of luck we've had thus far. Here's hoping for a great performance plus the result for a change :D

Great to have the games coming thick and fast now.

I'd actually play Enrique in this one to see if he can play himself into a bit of from with Wisdom on the other side.

      Jones

      Wisdom Carra Coates Enrique

      Sahin Henderson

      Suso

      Pacheco Morgan Assaidi

For once I think it should be a strong squad with Coates, Sahin and Flanaghan or Robinson in it. But the Suarez and Gerrard should be playing just to work the offensive game. These two must find a way to score otherwise we'll find it difficult to win vs Norwich.

      My team would be:
                       Reina
      Johnson   Carra   Coates      Robinson

                      Allen     Sahin
                          Gerrard
      Pacheco     Suarez            Assaidi

but I hope Suarez plays on the wing

Yeah, he needs to get fit and find his form because with Kelly out for an extended period we will need Johno playing at RB on a regular basis.  He should also lend a bit of experience to a youthful side.

            Pacheco Yesil Assaidi

Some youth with a couple of experienced defenders. Enrique in there to play into some form, Coates for match practice (as he will be needed to replace Agger if he if injured). Rest Raheem and Gerrard, give Suso, Assaidi, Yesil, Pacheco all time to impress further. Downing on the bench.

Bring on the youngsters for this one, but a few old heads included as WBA are no mugs.

Reina, Flanagan, Skrtel, Carragher, Enrique, Henderson, Sahin, Downing, Suarez, Morgan, Yesil

      4-3-3

Note - Downing in midfield - seen him there for AV and he was ok - been pretty poor on the wing so worth a shot.
