      Sep 29, 2015 11:11:49 am
With everyone getting excited about the Derby on the weekend there is the little matter of a match in the Europa League against the might of Sion FC.
On paper it should be our easiest group tie but as we all know LFC never do easy.

A opportunity to give some of the youngsters a run out, no point having a squad otherwise and seeing as though we have gone back to the 343.

      Bogdan
      Gomez
      Skrtel
      Sakho
      Ibe
      Moreno
      Rossiter
      Can
      Lallana
      Ings
      Origi

      Liverpool vs FC Sion

Liverpool will look to secure a second comfortable home win against Sion, with their visitors in Group B the first away side to score three at Anfield in a UEFA game.

Liverpool FC picked up a point on matchday one and can seize top spot in UEFA Europa League Group A if they record a second home success against FC Sion.

      Previous meetings
      • Roy Evans' Liverpool eliminated Alberto Bigon's Sion in the 1996/97 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup second round, winning 2-1 in Switzerland and 6-3 at Anfield.

      • Sion were the first visiting team to score three times in a European fixture at Anfield; only FC Barcelona (1-3, 2001), Chelsea FC (1-3, 2009), Udinese Calcio (2-3, 2012) and Real Madrid CF (0-3, 2014) have done so since.

      • The teams for Sion's last visit on 31 October 1996 were:
Liverpool: James, Scales (Redknapp 60), McAteer, Babb, McManaman, Fowler, Barnes, Berger, Thomas, Bjørnebye, Matteo.
Sion: Lehmann, Gaspoz (Bühlmann 75), Quentin, Wicky, Vercruysse, Bonvin (Vincze 75), Chassot, Sylvestre, Colombo, Lonfat (Zambaz 46), De Sousa.

      • Those were Sion's only previous games against English opponents.

      Form guide
      • Liverpool's 12 matches against Swiss sides have ended W6 D4 L2 (W3 D3 L0 at Anfield – W3 D1 L2 in Switzerland). Their last three home games against Swiss outfits ended in draws, most recently 1-1 against FC Basel 1893 in last season's UEFA Champions League group stage.

      • Sion are without a win in six European away trips (D3 L3 – including a 3-0 default defeat at Celtic FC) – a run which stretches back to a 1-0 triumph at TPS Turku in the UEFA Intertoto Cup in June 1998.

      • Liverpool made it through to the knockout phase in both of their previous UEFA Europa League group stage campaigns – 2010/11 and 2012/13.

      • Sion are featuring in the group stage of a major UEFA competition for the first time.

Defo think he will rotate for this one, won't risk Injury prone important players like Studger or shako.

Can see Joe Allen starting though chaps, and maybe Can pushed forward.

Defo want to see Gomez with Kolo.

Jose Enrique played with the ressies the other night how did he do ?

Not far off how I'd go mate although if 3 at the back is seen as the way forward for Brendan then he should be using it more often.

This is one of my main problems with him this season in that yet again we've went into a season without any real identity to our football and he's just flip flopping from on system to another.

Guessing we will go with 3-4-1-2:

      Mignolet

      Gomez
      Skrtel
      Sakho

      Ibe
      Milner (c)
      Rossiter

Confident of a win here, 3-0 to us.

Really can't see him risking sahko mate, not with Lovren being out, and the big man being injury prone. Mibees risk Skrtel cos Kolo can do a job if needed sunday.

It will be interesting to see if some guys get a rest here. The derby is on Sunday, but then we do have a nice lay off for rest. Could be a chance for some guys to get their chance (I wish we hadn't left Enrique off this roster), but we also need the wins at home. I'd go with:
                   Bogdan
         Toure   Skrtel   Gomez
      Ibe   Rossiter  Allen   Moreno
             Lallana    Couts
                     Origi

We'll have Ings and Studge on the bench if this lineup stutters. I'd like to finally see Teixieira at some point too. Anyone know if/how long  Firmino is out for?

That's the team for me. Enough experience with Kolo, Allen, Enrique and Lallana. Ibe, Ings, and Origi provide a decent attacking threat. A win of any kind will do to help build confidence and momentum.

Just don't think he will risk certain players with the derby on sunday. And this is supposedly the easiest game in Europa.

A chance for these guys to say right give me a game in league. Bench will be strong if needed.

won't happen but mate. We have too many injuries, if he risked guys like sturridge & shako we could be playing a ressie team v everton, just as some of the 1st team are finding some form.

There is the other argument tho, that the more games together the better, so don't change it.

But sunday is an early kick off, really only leaves Saturday for lighting training session for most players.

So probably looking at a minimum of 5 changes.

It seemed to work for many years and players knew once they were in the side they were in it until injury or poor form made them lose their place. Great if you have 24 players equal too each other but we simply don't have enough quality to put out a strong 2nd string team.
Can he afford another poor performance let alone defeat

Damn, hoped no  one would notice. The sad thing is I spent 5 minutes trying to add a player thinking I was one short, finally decided on Lucas and now he has to get dropped again.

Hope we rest clyne, Sakho, Moreno and Ings.
Play Gomez, Toure,Allen, origi and Ibe for sure. (Not stating that they take the aboves positions, just that they should play)

Problem we have is who is the back up to clyne and please don't say that it's can. He is neither a RB or a CB in my opinion.

If the young lads can't get in this game, particularly after being left out of a match against Carlisle, then Brendan runs the risk of disillusioning them.

There's already enough members of the so called 'Bomb Squad'.

Feeling optimistic about this game, although don't know why. Gone for a 3  0 win in the prediction league. Just hope the players selected turn up on the night.

It seemed to work for many years and players knew once they were in the side they were in it until injury or poor form made them lose their place. Great if you have 24 players equal too each other but we simply don't have enough quality to put out a strong 2nd string team.
Can he afford another poor performance let alone defeat

I agree with you, but modern football does not. ;D

Where are Sion in comparison to Villa ?
I personally know nothing about their recent performances or form.
As much as I want us to thrash them, I'm going for a cagey 2 : 1 to us.
Sorry, I just can't see us keeping a clean sheet at the mo !

If we're going to stick with 3 at the back then I really think we could do with playing a few regulars so they can adjust (considering we played 4 at the back all preseason). A poor result could put us in a bit of trouble here as well so I'd go for a strong team:

Bogdan; Gomez, Skrtel, Sakho; Clyne, Chirivella, Milner, Moreno; Coutinho, Ings, Origi.

Think the team will be a lot weaker than that though.

I think maybe the early KO of sunday has forced his hand and looks like they have decided early cup games they will use the squad.

Personally don't have a problem, esp. with us having so many injuries to key players.

I do think this shld be the 2nd priority tourni, and there is an argument for going out with best team available early doors, get the points, then rest players once qualified. Saying that, how many 1st team players have been playing that good anyway, think we all accept studger, coutinho & sahko should not be risked, only 3 players there.

You can rotate your squad if you have the quality but we do not. If you want to win a game the strongest team needs to be put out. Putting out a weakend side give the opposition a huge lift.

I know what you are saying totally agree. But we keep hearing how strong our squad is, so this is a massive test (AGAIN). ;D

The team I think will play, still has at least 6 full internationals & the rest u21 internationals. So its not that weak. My problem with doing this is they don't play competitive matches together much, yes in training and bounce matches, but not regularly that's why we always see teams struggle after rotation.

To be fair mate, this is Sion not Real Madrid, I think the team I picked off this forum last week could give them a run for their money.

      18 Managers in 4 years

One notable player in their history...  Gennaro Gattuso (Feb 25, 2013–March 25, 2013) He played for them for one month :)

Should be a walk in the park mate .... I am expecting a couple of goals from you.

I won't take these so easily and over confidential  ,as you say

If I am right, they won their first game vs the other ''favourites'' along with LFC in the group
ok they were at home , but I won't under-rate them IMO
Yes we are capable of an easy win with the right mentality
we should take it more seriously than anyone would think, especially the boss and players
Anyway HOPE you will be right and we will have a confortable win , we need it for confidence

The squad players getting a chance here must grab it, and show the hunger, If Ings starts we know he will drive the rest of the team forward.

We know on his day lallana can be very very good, he will get a chance to play in the no.10 (I hope) and Ibe who has been out of sorts has a chance to get back to his better form.

Its all there for the fringe lads.

Very good point mate. For my part, I couldn't at this stage give a f*ck about the Europa league. If we get ahead in it and get to say the quarter finals then I'll get interested, but until then it ought to be used as games to give the squad a run. If in doing so we go out of the thing altogether so be it.

All well and good but if he plays Sturridge and he picks up a knock  and isn't ready for the derby he'd get slaughtered.

Brendan said from the summer he was going to play a different side in the EL so I don't get what all the fuss is about now.

I find it funny people are chucking in the excuses for if we don't manage to win tonight.

This should be an absolute walk in the park, anything other than a win would border on the embarrassment of not being able to put away Carlisle in 2 hrs of footy.

      Yep.

Even a changed 11 should be beating them.

Should it really though, our European record in recent season has been piss poor. This team actually won something last season. They have had a couple of losses in the league, but won their 1st Europa game.

Defo think if did not have so many injuries & we were playing Everton at lunchtime sunday we would have started with a stronger team.

Exactly what I was saying Injuries and Everton game, restricting use of certain players, but also using it blood some younger players.

      Quote
Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge will be rested for the Europa League visit of Swiss side Sion on Thursday.

Belgium international Divock Origi, who has started just one match for the Reds since returning from a loan spell at Lille, is likely to play up front.

Forwards Christian Benteke (hamstring) and Roberto Firmino (leg) are also missing for Brendan Rodgers's side.

Skipper Jordan Henderson, out until mid-November with a broken foot, and defender Dejan Lovren are out.

Rodgers opted to give starts to a number of young players in the 1-1 draw at French side Bordeaux, and looks set to do the same against Sion.

The Reds travel to Everton for the first Merseyside derby of the season on Sunday.

"Our approach to this game is how it's been in the competition - this is an opportunity for young players and an opportunity for players on the fringe of the team that aren't getting so many games," said the Northern Irishman.

"But it's also going to require players that have been playing. Ultimately for us the aim is to win the game.

"We recognise that our home games in this competition are very important and we enter into it with that mindset. Then we can concentrate on the game on Sunday."

Regardless of what form we're in, what form they're in or anything else, our team should be beating FC Sion. Some of those asking "should we though?", what would your reaction be if we were to draw or get beat? In all honesty, I'm assuming you'd be saying we should have beaten them and that we're sh*t for not doing so.

I'm not saying they're completely sh*t but we're definitely better. They beat Rubin Kazan but they're shocking at the minute with 2 wins, 1 draw and 7 losses in their league.

Yes obv. we should be beating them, but....

      1) our form is poor as well, what is it 1 win in 7 ?
      2) our recent European form is even worse
      3) we are using the squad

Personally think the team that we are putting out there should win, we have some quality internationals starting and some cracking young players. Origi might be 4th choice striker, but he played at the last world cup ffs. This could be the game that gets him going.

Or as Brendan would say ... undefeated in our last 4 games. :)

Regardless of what might think about the Europa, would really like to win tonight, to progress in the competition sure, but more importantly for me right now to get some momentum going into the weekend. Winning is a habit. Need to get hooked asap...

Totally man, need to go on a wee run now. And besides that winning home games in any European comp is a must.

This will be the first game I've seen us play since Arsenal so no idea what to expect in terms of who or how we'll play.  I'm looking forward to getting back into the footy groove though regardless.

We should beat these though shouldn't we?

Yes.  We need to start stringing wins together to build confidence. Doesn't matter who the opposition is or what competition it is.

It's also important that we settle on a formation and playing style to move forward with. I don't care if it's a 3-5-2 / 4-2-3-1 / 4-4-2 / etc, but we need the players to start building familiarity in the system so we can develop patterns of play.

I hope your right mate, but a lot seem to have accepted mediocrity and failure is our future already... particularly our owners.
