Massive congratulations to Virgil, our new Captain, tremendous responsibility for him which I'm sure he will relish and guide the team to more silverware, following in the footsteps of Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson is no mean feat so he has a lot to live up to, but I'm convinced he will do so with class and style.

Perhaps not my first choice for the captaincy, not that it matters. I will back him, hopefully to lift some silverware, before the end of the coming season.

Was about time we had some proper change around, so super excited and looking forward to the new season.

Happy for Virgil. A colossus for us since he arrived. There have been so many players leaving this summer I think it's important to maintain some consistency with 1 of the old guard keeping the armband.

He's mentally compensating for his fear of another physical injury like he had. Before his injury, he believed he was a colossus and nothing could hurt him. Now he knows exactly how long he could be out if he gets hurt so he's compensating by not being aggressive and not putting his body on the line. In my completely un-expert opinion, Virgil needs psychological help. Sports Psychology.

This is such a bizarre take considering the season after his bad injury he came back and played almost every single game (51) possible and we won 2 trophies, and almost collected all 4.

Did he just magically forget about his injury in 2021/22 and then remember again in last season? I'm trying to understand.

Not a good showing yesterday. A few of of his clearances were pretty bad, headed it back to Chelsea player. Seems a bit slow. The injury seems to be catching up to him. Prime VVD would've toyed with Sterling and their main striker.

Some strong clearances and marshalled the back line relatively well for me.

Good first prem game as an official captain.

Was I watching a different game? I thought he was really good

I thought VVD had a good game along with Konate, Trent and Robbo were very poor

I thought Trent had an alright game. Robbo had a torrid first half but was good in the second half. Both Virgil and Kanoute got dragged out of their positions a few times though but that's the consequence of not having that extra level of steel in front of you doing the DM role.

Felt bad for Robbo, Gakpo offer little help in tracking back the runs of James which resulted in 2 v 1 with Sterling which impossible position for him to be in.

As for VvD I thought he was solid, yes he has to alter his game a little but given the loss of pace but he was very effective along side Konate.
