      Wage Bill 2008/09
      Jun 08, 2010 11:51:28 am
Just noticed our wage bill rose in the 2008/09 season (year we finished 2nd) by £17M from the year before.

Can anybody fill in the blanks on this one?

Wasn't this the famous 20m budget that went on players we already had?

Didn't Carra, Gerrard and a few signed new contracts? And then we also signed Masch on a permanent in 2007/2008 or something?

      Roughly 300,000 a week rise isn't it?

That seems a lot even for all the contract improvements.

Not sure if contract extentions made in 2008/09 would immediately effect the figures for that season but these are the ones I could find on the official site from 08/09 and further down 07/08

Posted a thread related to this in the general football forum: http://www.lfcreds.com/reds/index.php?topic=30692.0

      • The wage bills of Premier League clubs have now recorded double digit percentage growth for three years running and total wages have grown by in excess of 55% (£474m) in that period. With wages growth outpacing revenue growth in 2008/09, the Premier League’s wages/revenue ratio increased to 67% – a record high. This key performance indicator increased in all four divisions in 2008/09.

      • Overall, The Football League is now spending 86% of its revenues on total wages, with only an £82m surplus of revenue over wages to manage the rest of the business, fund operating costs, and consider transfer budgets, which is a huge, and ultimately unsustainable, financial challenge.

I'd forgot about Alonso's new deal.  I'd imagine he was one that took a big pay rise that season.

      Thanks for the responses.
