Steven Gerrard to stay at Liverpool FC - ECHO latest

STEVEN Gerrard today committed his future to Liverpool FC.

The Reds skipper ended months of speculation as he welcomed the signing of Joe Cole from Chelsea and admitted he cannot wait to play alongside him.

The news will come as a massive boost to Liverpool supporters - the second in 24 hours.

Gerrard said of Cole: "It is a great signing for us. I know Joe well through the England set-up and have seen first hand just how good a player he is.

"He has proved his ability over many years in the Premier League - sometimes against us - so it will be fantastic to play alongside him in a red shirt for Liverpool."

Gerrard, who has been at Anfield since he was eight years old and has never in recent seasons expressed any desire to leave despite the speculation this summer, added: "I've told him what a great club this is and I'm sure Joe's the sort of exciting talent our fans will love to see. I made it clear that I simply needed to concentrate on the World Cup and then have a decent holidaty with my family.

"I wanted the chance to meet Roy Hodgson privately and having done so, I'm very impressed with his plans for the future."

Steven Gerrard today warmly welcomed the signing of Joe Cole after the midfielder agreed a four-year deal with the Reds subject to a medical.

 "It's a great signing for us" said the Liverpool skipper. "I know Joe well through the England set-up and have seen first hand just how good a player he is.

"He's proved his ability over many years in the Premier League, sometimes against us - so it will be fantastic to play alongside him in a red shirt for Liverpool.

"I've told him what a great club this is and I'm sure Joe's the sort of exciting talent our fans will love to see."

Commenting for the first time on the media speculation surrounding his own future, Gerrard revealed: "I made it clear that I simply needed to concentrate on the World Cup and then have a decent holiday with my family.

"I wanted the chance to meet Roy Hodgson privately and having done so I'm very impressed with his plans for the future of the team.

"I've only returned to training today at Melwood with some of the other World Cup players, but I can't wait for the new season to start."

Nando's definitely gonna stay then since his boyfriend is staying.

Why must this happen every summer?

Regardless of how good a season we've had, tons of stories come out that Stevie will be leaving us. Usually for Madrid. There's never any proof in these rumours, and as soon as Gerrard gives an official word, the rumours are quashed.

But, I just can't wait to do it all over again next summer

If I had to choose between SG and Nando, I'd pick SG. Just think he's brilliant. Nando is too mind, but SG is not just a great player, but Liverpool through and through. Brilliant if he's stayin.

Think that's what we need, players who've PROVED they can compete in the PL. It's not a time for risks. We know Joe Cole will perform. There are players out there eg. Scott Parker, Damien Duff, Wayne Bridge etc. who might be available and would do a very good job. Hope we look at home rather than abroad.

EXCLUSIVE: Liverpool FC legend Phil Thompson hails Steven Gerrard's decision to stay at Anfield


LIVERPOOL legend Phil Thompson believes the signing of Joe Cole was crucial in convincing skipper Steven Gerrard to stay at Anfield.

The ex-Reds captain says the acquisition of the former Chelsea star on a free transfer helped new boss Roy Hodgson to prove the club’s ambition to their talisman.

“It’s fantastic news that Steven is staying,” Thompson said this afternoon.

“With Joe Cole signing and Steven staying, things are really coming together this summer.

“I’m sure the signing of Cole played a part in his decision. Cole is someone Steven and Jamie Carragher know very well from the England set-up.

“It shows the ambition of the club for the coming season and it’s Roy Hodgson carrying out what he promised.

“That signing sent out a message not only to the players at Liverpool but to players at other clubs considering their futures.

“Steven’s decision also shows that Hodgson is a very good man manager. He will have spoken to Steven about his vision and obviously Steven liked what he heard.”

Thompson admits he feared with no Champions League football on offer Gerrard may have decided to opt for a new challenge with Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho keen on taking him to the Bernabeu.

“I wasn’t 100% convinced Steven was going to stay,” he said.

“Top players like Fernando Torres and him should be playing in the Champions League. The hope was he would commit for another 12 months to help the club get back into the top four and that’s the case.

“Steven needed to see the club were determined to get back to where they belong.

“I’m also sure Steven appreciates the fact the club has signed good English players this summer with Cole following Jonjo Shelvey to Anfield.

“I think with Roy in charge we will see a shift towards a more English side and that’s great.

“With the change in manager, Cole signing and Steven agreeing to stay there’s a really positive vibe.

“Now we need Torres and Javier Mascherano to follow suit. Then we need to get the ownership issue sorted.”
