Your memories of great Liverpool moments
      Aug 21, 2010 01:12:09 pm
So much negative stuff at the minute I thought this thread might distract us for a while and get us thinking of happier days!

Ill start with Stamford bridge 1986 May the 3rd. Lat game of the season at Chelsea. We needed a win to win the title failure would mean Everton retained the title  :o

Anyway step forward the king Kenny Dalglish. Beglin and Whelan keep the ball alive in the Chelsea box a flick on to Kenny who controls the ball beautifully on his chest before adding a calm finish.

Next thing I remember is bedlam behind the goal and me thinking to meself "I thought we were the away side"

History was completed a few weeks later doing the double beating Everton in the cup final 3 1.

Will never forget that moment at Chelsea tho

F.A CUP victories. Those two late goals from Owen were incredible. We were totally outplayed by Arsenal, but Owen popped up with two late strikes to bring cup home.
Gerrard's screamer against West Ham, what more can I say?

1977 European Cup Final - First one, what a magnificent victory, seeing all the chequered red and white flags waving in the Italian sunshine on that balmy night in Rome is something I will never forget.

At Anfield in 1996 sitting in the Paddock againt Southampton, 1-1 about to blow for FT and then Steve McManaman dribbles the ball round Beasant and slots home for 2-1. Place errupts and Beasant picks the ball from his net.

      Ooh were to start:

The sight of all the reds marching towards the Attaturk is something I'll definitely never forget.

John Barnes doing a jig of sheer emotion after setting up Rushies header in 89.

Barnes taking the piss out of four QPR defenders before slotting past future England keeper David Seaman.

Barnes taking the piss out of and torturing Nottingham Forest defenders as we tonked Forest 5-0.

Rockin Ronny coming on and smashing one past the binman in the Derby, after barndoor Barlow had about four chances (all blazed over) to give Everton the lead.

The good times of laughing at the mancs attempts to win the league, especially as we cost them the title in 92 their 26th year of trying and the Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life  song kicking off!!

Without a doubt winning the F.A.CUP for the first time in 1965,bringing the CUP home on the Sunday and playing Inter Milan on the following Wednesday.I can still vision Gerry Byrne and Gordon Milne parading the cup around the ground before the kick off and in my mind that has to be my most electrifying moment ever at Anfield. We took Inter apart that night and that to my mind was the start of our European successes which was to follow as most of us are too well aware of.That match alone is proof that it was a mistake to make the KOP seated, make it standing only again and the good times will roll again.I feel very lucky that I was around in the 60s,70s and 80s,to anyone who was not around then you do not know what you missed.

Waking up at 4am in Australia for Istanbul, and despite thinking i should just go to bed at half-time, something kept me watching. That belief that is instilled in Liverpool is what kept me up, and it was one of the best memories i have.

I can't wait until i get to a match to add to that memory.

My first memory was the 96 Cup final. But thats not a great memory, cried my eyes out.

My first great memory was getting the home kit with the big white v-neck on it. My uncle brought it up for me and it was my first kit and i wouldn't take it off, think i wore it all day everyday except for school for a good year.

And probably the whole treble season under Houllier, was brilliant. The Worthington Cup final was great, first time we'd won something that i was old enough to remember.

So many great moments! Istanbul, every cup won so I'll talk about that funny game in 2004, against the title holders....with Neil Mellor deep in injury time score from 25 yards from....nowhere!!

That was the first game back from injury for Steve, we played with Simana and Neil in front! We outplayed arsenal that day and concede an equaliser which wasn't deserved..it's going to be a draw...we all gutted but proud of the performance.........and then............out of the blue......last kick of the game.....You know the rest :D

We didn't win anything that day except 3 points..But I remember how crazy we all (and I'll include you lot here  ;D probably) went with that goal..

Barcalona in the Uefa semi for me. It was my first experience of a big European semi and I had stood in line all day to get a ticket. The atmosphere was amazing and to send Rivaldo and co ( sorry Pepe ) packing was fantastic. ' He's got no hair but we don't care...Gary Gary Mac !!!

For me I can never forget that night in Instanbul.  But also, the second 4-3 against Newcastle was brilliant, mostly because I thought we'd thrown it away when it was at 3-3.  Stig's cross was beautiful!!

Yeah, great header from God! I remember a game against newcastl when we were 2-0 down. Hamann got sent off for them and Vegard Heggem tore them to pieces down our right side and we won 4-2!

      F***ing David James!!

Should of been out of sight in that second half after tearing them a new one in the first half and then followed some suicidal defending and terrible keeping.

Although it still won't beat the first game the year previous, what a match that was!!

I remember istanbul, sitting there with my dad and going, this is going to be tough but i think we can get it.

When we came out and Gerrard scored that goal i was like this is it got to be, we then did the 3-3 and my dad nearly fainted. We went mad and then was going crazy in the peno's.

Watching us against Chelsea at Anfield where they were 6 minutes extra time which come from no where, everyone was on a knife edge.

Seeing the YNWA sung first hand is truely amazing, everytime i hear that song sung by 40,000 odd people chills go down my spine

There are just too many memories but two stand out for me the most.

Champions League 2005 and FA Cup 2006.

We won both cups in style.

Liverpool v Chelsea in the 2005 CL Final at Anfield. Never has 90 minutes ever felt so so long. The moment Luis Garcia scored Chelsea were all over us and then when I saw 6 added minutes I really feared. A few minutes later after the board was shown the ball dropped for Gudjohnsen a few yards out to comfortably slam it in and my heart was in my mouth and literally the I felt the tears were about to be released.....but he missed!! Absolutely incredible. It may have taken 10 years of my life, but boy was it worth it! Hearing the roar the moment that final whistle was blown and the following rendition of You'll Never Walk Alone as everyone in red went crazy and were in tears (as were those in blue) was mind blowing. Anfield's finest night in my opinion.

Same match - Ray Clemence made a fantastic save to keep it 1-1 before Tommy Smith's header and Phil Neal's penalty won us the first of five European Cups.

Also against Moenchengladbach, only in 1973, UEFA Cup Final first leg (Anfield): the match was abandoned in the first half due to torrential rain. Shanks didn't pick John Toshack, but he saw enough to convince him the German defence was weak in the air.  When the match was played 24 hours later, Tosh caused havoc and we won 3-0. Good job we did: they were awesome in the second leg, which they won 2-0.

Im only 22 so my memories dont go too far back!
There are so many, just to pick one- Olympikos & Stevie G, Chelsea 2005, FA Cup 2006, and of course Istanbul!

Its amazing how watching one football game can put you through a rollercoaster of emotions-

At half time- you would have thought someone died in my house!
We usually get up, eat something or get a drink, chat about the game, but no one moved, heads in hands & no one said a word! I am not one to turn the channel over- win or lose!
Then 3 goals in 6 minutes, i went from the brink of tears & depression to an excited mess, jumping around & screaming with my Dad & brothers- my mum wondering what all the fuss was about! (i am still trying to convert/educate her!)
My whole body tensed during the penalties, we were breathing sighs of relief with every one- Jerzy Dudek became a hero in a matter of minutes!
Then Gerrard lifting that beautiful cup put tears in my eyes- and seeing it again brings the exact same feelings!

The greatest footballing comeback of all time- and i witnessed it, went through it & celebrated it!

Just need to see Stevie lift No.19, and im done!

John Toshack is always scoring....can you hear the Kopites roaring.....Toshack Is Our King !!

St.Etienne in the quarter finals was a match to remember as well, the semi's against Zurich was such an anti-climax in comparasion, but going to Rome after we'd won the League and played in the Cup Final against the mancs which we should have won, was a season to remember, we were on top of the World and felt we were invincible, we went on to rule Europe and everyone was scared of us....those were the days eh.

4-1 at Old Trafford in 08/09. It's always sweet beating United in any shape or form but F***ing twatting them in their own back yard was something special. And Nando's 5 finger celebration was F***ing quality. Sheer F***ing quality.

4-0 against Arsenal in the treble winning season. This was meant to be the start of Arsenal's total football style with the likes of Pires, Ljungberg, Bergkamp and Henry. And we wiped the floor with them, Stevie's belter from the edge of the box was one of his best strikes that rarely gets mentioned.

Houllier's return against Roma. Was such a sentimental night. European nights are always special at Anfield, but that was something different. One of the greatest European nights I've been to. We have the memories of Inter 65, St Ettienne 77 and Chelsea 05, but Roma 2002 was extra special as well.

Both 4-3s over Newcastle were quality, couldn't write it to happen two years on the trot. Two completely different games as well, the first one was back and forth while the second was ours until we threw it away. Then of course Stan in 96 and God in 97 came up trumps for the Reds.

Gary Mc's last minute winner in the Derby was F***ing quality. Like the United game I mentioned, beating Everton in any way is something special but last minute at their sh*t hole ground was boss to watch. Can't help remembering seeing the reactions on the bench, something else that.

5-4 against Alaves, one of the best finals ever. And the You'll Never Walk Alone at the end, spine chilling. Loved it.

God sniffing the line against Everton, F***ing love that man. Drove them up the F***ing wall it did. Going back for a second time was so funny, seeing all those blue nose bitter cu*ts going spare when he did it.

A few there to mull over.

Another match that I always look back on with fondness is FC Basle v Liverpool back in 2002. Only 11 at the time but I remember the shock at being 3-0 down and being all over the place. We were so poor that you'd be forgiven that we were playing Barcelona and not Basle seeing as both their kits were similar! Sadly it'd be a game in which Stevie would rather forget as he was desperately affected by personal issues which saw the poor guy taken off at half time, something I didn't realise until much later on.

But then the second half came and we were an entirely different team. Murphy does brilliantly to score from the edge of the area then Smicer scored that all important second goal (of course he'd do it again 3 years later but in far more dramatic surroundings of course!). Finally Owen scored a rebounded penalty and it was 3-3. Sure it may have stayed that way and we may have exited the Champions League but it was a great match and I was pleased for the Basle fans for what was arguably their finest ever moment in history (and give them credit - their fans were amazing) even if it wasn't for us. But more importantly that comeback, I feel, would prove a crucial incentive to many of those players who would face the same situation a couple of seasons later against Olympiakos at the same stage and of course AC Milan where we had to score at least 3 on both occasions. I honestly felt it proved to be a fantastic mental note for a lot of those players who would feature 2 seasons later - so in the end a lot of good came out of that game.

May not be the biggest agme and most memorable moment for LFC fans, but it is something that will always stick in my mind.

I can remember watching the Fulham v Liverpool match on Setanta Sport, 2 seasons ago. We ended up winning 3-2 after a Torres beaut in the last minute. I am a bit patchy about the facts. Anyway, i just remember going F***ing mental. Ringing all me Ma*c mates singing down the phone "We're gunna win the league! We're gunna win the league!". I felt on top of the world. I was soon brought down when we didn't, infact, win the league :'(.

Man United 1-4 Liverpool - Day before my birthday watching it in a pub full of Mancs, and by the end of the game I was near tears - best Liverpool display in years.

Yeah, was watching it in the pub, mostly us reds in. Then when manure scored the penalty all the mancs started coming in happy as larry mocking us. Then Nando, Stevie, Fab and the Doss well and truely shoved it right up em. We gave them a good send off as they trudged out just after the Doss made it 4 ;D

Thing was though, they were all the same pric*ks who walked in at half time during the 2005 cl final. They all wanted to drink our champaigne that we had set up on the pool table. We threw the fu**ers out that night as well!

Altogether now as they left....... ' WHERES YOUR EUROPEAN CUP......WHERES YOUR EURO, WHERES YOUR EURO WHERES YOUR EUROPEAN CUP??? ;D

Anyway, I just remember going f**king mental. Ringing all me Ma*c mates singing down the phone "We're gunna win the league! We're gunna win the league!". I felt on top of the world. I was soon brought down when we didn't, infact, win the league :'(.

Yeah I'm pretty sure you're talking about the match against Tony Adam's Portsmouth. But the one where we did win 1-0 at Fulham with a last minute winner thanks to Yossi Benayoun was F***ing unreal. I went absolutely nuts! I actually scared my dog I was that overjoyed when it happened. We didn't win the league but boy it felt good at the time!

When that goal went in I really believed we were going to win it. Next day manure were 2-1 at home to villa with 6 minutes left, but after 10 minutes of slergie time won 3-2.

I might be alone in this one but the Champions League quarter final against Chelsea in 08/09. Lost the first leg 3-1 at Anfield after Nando put us ahead after 16 mins ,i think, we were hammered in the first leg. But the feeling after it wasn't the same as other defeats, it was accepted but there was still an amazing hope for the second leg.

Going into the second leg, Gerrard was pulled out just before the match but there was still hope. It was just before the 20th Hillsborough anniversary and 2 first half goals from an Aurelio free kick and an Alonso penalty turned the tie on its head. Chelsea scored 2 unanswered in the second half. Tie over? No. Lucas scored. Chelsea scored again. Surely over, no! Kuyt late on. Lampard eventually finished the scoring and it was finally finished.

I remember being so proud of the lads. The next day Oliver Holt wrote an article on the match, but it wasn't about Chelsea's progression, it was titled, "A fitting tribute to the 96". I still have that paper.

Watching the service, the players were given a rapturous applause and no one cared about the result too much. So much pride. Loved it.

First European game 3-0 v Auxerre in front of around 24,000 at Anfield.

Mike Marsh and a Jan Molby pen levelling it up early on, then Mark Everton Walters secured the victory late in the second half, first time we'd ever come back from a 2-0 defeat in the first leg!!

And that 24,000 made some unbelievable noise that night.

Paul Ince's equaliser against United. Match ended 2-2 after we were two nil down.

Twenty minutes to go and Redknapp pulled one back, then in the last minute the ball broke and Ince blasted it in. He went ballistic with his celebration.

I recall a game against Spurs at Anfield in the 1960s when we were getting beat 2-0 at half time and it looked like we were going to get a hiding.Well we won 5-2 and if my old memory is right I think it was Willie Stevenson who scored our first goal.we totally outplayed Spurs in that second half.

That was because around that time the revelations of Fergie's autobiography had come out where Fergie had labeled Ince a Big Time Charlie, if my memory serves me correct.

Didn't he also say it on some documentary programme following Bruce, which showed a few inside things including a team talk a couple of days before a Liverpool match were Fergie totally laid into Ince. It's also the reason why he got shut of him and fu**ed Ince off to Inter.

I remember gvoing to Wolves, last game of the season, I think it was 73/74 and Wolves needed to win to stay in Div 1. We needed to Win, or draw 0-0 1-1 or 2-2 to be champions. On the same night, I think it was Derby v Q.P.R. Derby had to win to be champions, but only if we lost. Q.P.R. had to avoid defeat so Wolves would go down instead of them. We beat Wolves to become champions and Q.P.R. beat Derby so even if Wolves won, they still would have been relegated due to the other result. The reds totally took over Molinouxe, Away end, and most of both stands, it was an absolutely brilliant night. I've never seen as much red  at an away game. The fact that our win didn't make any difference to Wolves being relegated, I had a safer journey home. I had hitch hiked up from Nr Bath on me own, and had to walk through Wolverhampton with the Wolves fans, to find me way home.

Another great memory of mine is the Derby at Goodison in 2000. Sander kicking the ball, it hitting Hutchison on the back and rolling over the line with the last kick of the game and all the bitters celebrating like they'd won the League. Then all of a sudden Poll says he'd already blown for full time. The look on their faces was a F***ing picture.

Was convinced that Shevchenko would score, couldn't believe it when Dudek somehow pulled off that save, knew from that moment the trophy was our's.

Know exactly what you mean. Its the nod of the head after, saw that and knew it was our night. Was as if Dudek just knew he'd got one over on Shevchenko and was fired up for the pens, a nod of total self-confidence.

Just thinking about it makes me beam smiling, best night ever.

Brilliant memories, first remember my dad walking through with to grab some beers before kick off and as he was sitting down they scored, can remember at the time just feeling totally deflated. Just remember at HT wanting to cry and then those 6 minutes, F***ing hell those were the best 6 minutes!!

God i remember that Benfica game..
In the 14 minutes it took me to drive home from work, like a nutta- we had scored 2 goals!
And i couldnt get talksport of 5live in my car!

I walked through the door & my brother told me all about it- "Lucas skinned 2 defenders & scored"
      "What?! Lucas? shutup!"

I didnt believe a word until they showed the first half analysis!
      He is capable after all!
