      Carragher: England are embarrassing cheats

Jamie Carragher believes England are CHEATING by having Fabio Capello as coach.

The Italian, who led the nation to last summer’s World Cup Finals, will qualify for Euro 2012 with just a point against Montenegro on Friday.

But Carragher believes the highly-decorated Capello should never have been at the helm.

The Liverpool defender, said: “If your manager’s not good enough, that’s your country’s fault. Get a better manager. Do the coaching qualification better.

“I think it’s a form of cheating at international football and to be honest it’s a little bit embarrassing.”

Capello succeeded Steve McClaren three years ago, after England failed to qualify for Euro 2008 under the former Middlesbrough boss.

Carragher was part of the squad that Capello took to South Africa last summer, but the 33-year-old maintains the next manager must be English - whether they are good enough or not.

“I think Capello’s come into the job with all he’d done at AC Milan, and what he’d done at Real Madrid, and he’s got an aura about him, a presence," said Carragher.

“Steve McClaren didn’t have any of that coming into the job. And even if it didn’t go right with him, you can’t say, ‘Oh, it’s alright, we’ll get a foreign manager now.’

“It’s unfortunate, but you have to go with the next best thing.

“Maybe it’s something in our culture, or because English managers don’t get the chance to win club games at the top.

“If all the Premier League managers were English, someone would have to win the league, someone would have to win the FA Cup. They’d have to accumulate these trophies and that’s what it was like in the past.

“I’ve got nothing against Capello - I went with him to the World Cup and got to know him a little bit there - but I just think that’s what international football is.

“I can’t say the World Cup went great under Capello, because it didn’t, but getting a foreign manager is like saying, ‘Well, our keeper’s not good enough, so we’re going to go and get Buffon from Italy’, or whoever it may be.

“Benitez, Houllier, Mourinho - they’ve all got things about them in terms of having won the big trophies. Does that mean English managers don’t get a chance at the Premier League? Look at Chelsea with a 33-year-old manager.

“In years gone by, "The Chosen One" would have got that position, or an up and coming manager who’s done a great job [would], but that doesn’t happen anymore and with the national team it’s about what you’ve achieved, what you’ve got in the locker.”

Should someone point out to him that Moyes (along with the King of course) is Glaswegian??? :lmao:

Certainly reads like if he had been asked his opinion of managers to be at Liverpool he would have preferred a British one.
Does that mean he was responsible for ejecting Rafa or suggesting Roy should be brought in to replace him.

      Either way both disastrous calls.

Fair enough mare but Jamie's opinion wouldn't really count for much in the final decision, he might have an opinion and that is it - an opinion and of no real consequence in the hiring and firing dept.
The fact that Herpes & Gonnorrhea wanted Rafa gone and were prepared to use any method to achieve this end like promoting disharmony, probably led to Jamie's comment being nationally aired, as it was.
No doubt the lad regrets saying what he did, when he did - but sh*t does happen.

One thing is certain ... Carragher should talk less on these issues ... The quality of English managers is ridiculously low at the moment ... Here is a vote from the Mirror's web site on Capello's preferred successor ...

You really can't make this sh*t up ...

      Oh dear.

I hope he's been mis-quoted or, at least, quoted out of context; there's just so much wrong with the whole thing.

I suppose it is true that if all Premier League managers were English then English managers would win all the trophies. However, using that logic; if all teams were 'managed' by six to ten year olds then that 'group' too would gain the trophy winning experience - whether or not that experience would see them take the step up to European or World Cup glory is...er...highly debatable.

Fingers crossed on the whole mis-quoted/out of context thing.  :-\

As a player I always loved Carragher and for years he was my favorite Red ever. But he's so narrow minded in certain aspects, I just can't relate to him in a lot of stuff.
