The tension then would be if Gomez asserts himself as a starter the way he did last season before his injury. Same as with the forwards, would someone want to join us if it is likely to be three players four counting Matip) for two slots. I know, there will be enough games for everyone. But it would still be a factor in the recruitment process and the decision-making of any target.
It’s a fair point mate. Being honest, if I’m Koulibaly, I fancy myself to cement a place alongside Virgil. Matip, while an excellent defender, seems to have a knack of picking up injuries. Could say the same for Gomez however maybe a bit unfair as they were impact and not muscular. He is only 22 though and I would hope that he would not abandon ship if someone like Koulibaly came in.
Saying all this I don’t think it is really likely to happen and would be more than happy with an able and reliable replacement for Lovren (should he leave) with the aim of Gomez establishing himself as the first choice. If Matip lets him.
