      Walk on...
      Apr 23, 2013 02:10:35 am
The last 36 hours have been very tough for us.

First we watched in disbelief as Luis Suarez mindlessly bit into the arm of a Chelsea player and have since been wondering what his punishment will be, and how much further it will dent his already tarnished (to say the least) reputation. For the record, I don't care what other people think of Luis. If I believe in him and others castigate him for made up reasons, so what. But yesterday he made a massive mistake and for once he will be punished for a valid reason - even if he will get a harsher punishment than anyone else would.

A few hours ago, we saw Robin van Persie fire Man U to title number 20. The hardest moment for me was when they won number 19 to actually surpass us, but it goes without saying that each title they add to their tally is tough to take as well. Evra can have his moment of smugness at the end too. Despite him being portrayed by the media as a bigger man than Luis, he feels the need to spend those precious moments after winning title#20 by mocking a player from a rival team (a team not even in the title race with them) rather than parading the trophy around the stadium in front of his own fans with his own team mates.  :f_doh:

There are 2 ways of judging the character of someone:

      1. How they act when they are on top of things.
It's always easy to be gracious when you win - well, it is for most. The antics Evra and co tonight have shown once again the true character of that lot.

      and

      2. How you behave when you are down.
And this is us and has been us for a long time, obviously to different extents. We haven't been champions for over 20 years now, but for the majority of that time we have still contended. More recently, however, we've been struggling to contend for 4th, never mind 1st.

Right now, we must watch Man United lift their 20th league title - and we must do so with integrity. I'm not saying praise them, but no matter how painful it is, we must watch and realise that they are on top and we are way behind. And then we must remember that we acted with this integrity when finally, the day comes when we are on top, and they are below us.

It might not be in the next few years, but the day will come when we will be back up there where we belong, and it's times like this when we must remember to hold our heads up high and just keep going. Keep fighting and never ever give up. Do things the right way - the Liverpool way. And when our day comes, we will have earned it, and it will be that much sweeter.

Just read, and remember what this club is all about:

When you walk, through a storm
Hold your head up high, and don't be afraid of the dark
At the end of the storm, there's a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark

Walk on through the wind, Walk on through the rain
though your dreams be tossed and blown
Walk on, Walk on, with hope in your heart
      and you'll never walk alone
      You'll never walk alone

Walk on, Walk on,with hope in your heart
      and you'll never walk alone

      You'll never walk alone.

i agree with you 100%.  today has been tough as a lfc fan.

luis really shot himself in the foot with that bite.... just crazy

and evra, the guy is a total tool.

i'll conclude with an analogy... if we the fans are banks and our loyalty is the money we have in our vault.... lfc has been withdrawing alot over the past few years.  right now,  we are still ok, still have money in the vault... but lfc needs to start depositing again soon because one day, even the largest bank, the most loyal of fans, will feel the pinch of insufficient funds.

So your saying if liverpool dont start challenging again fans will stop supporting. I for one will never run out of loyalty for the reds even if we end up in the conference.

13 titles have been won ......... 13 while we have sat and watched.
The last 3 have been hard.
Last year they got stung by their neighbours.
They have come back and are going for a record number of points.

The only reason they have the 13 is they copied everything we had already done.

We have become the "Old Lady Of The Grafton." as was written 12 months ago

Shankly and others built the legacy we hold today but to listen to the AyreSpeak and Rodgers soundbite sh*te is as far removed from the Boot room as you can get.

If we can get Kenny back in somewhere, keep JC on board and eventually Stevie in an appropriate role for the club we may just keep our DNA .
If we can keep that DNA and the unique template of who we are then to glory we will return.

FSG have a challenge. They now have to come up with inspired thinking and inspired people.
They do not have those people yet.

When we do ... then match that to our traditions and values that NO other club can hold.... we will be back at the top.

Today is not where we want to be.

not so much as stop supporting as i believe we'll still be reds fans.. probably for life.  but like many others have said in many other threads, anfield is different now.. quieter, not as engaged.  it's a by product of teams not reaching expectations.    I've said in many other threads that I actually believe in BR.. i really hope his style of play can get us to where we want to be.  He really needs another season to make his mark before we can judge him.

But in regards to OP's post, I'm a huge fan of luis, if he doesnt win PFA, he really has only himself to blame.  It is a vote and although the votes have already been cast, he had to gain a level of respect from others outside the LFC organization to win this prestigious award.  I wish the best for luis, but would not be surprised if he falls short this year.

We have to keep our chins up again and know that one day we will reach that summit that we so desperately crave and boy the day we do, we are going to F***ing celebrate hard.

We will be back,we are too good a club not to be the envy of England and Europe again. Also Luis Suarez should  NOT be made to carry the can for any failings this season.

+1. A very good post. I particularly agreed to this statement ......

"The only reason they have the 13 is they copied everything we had already done."

Yes, sir alex slur followed exactly what he had done in all those conquering years. Look at how manure play, we're more or less watching the Liverpool of the old. Therefore, I'm very dissapointed as to why new managers that came and go needs to invent their own brand of football, just study the blue print of our successsful years; the players, the tactics, the training. the mentality instilled in the players,   ...... etc etc it's all there. But no, every manager that came in tried to re-invent the wheels while whiskey nose was smart enough to steal our blue print of success under our nose and implemented it so successfully over the years till now.

So, BR has spoken somewhere that he'll rope in the old timers to share their experience and ideas. Yes, it should have been done years ago but it's not too late to start.

The players that reminds me most about the Liverpool of the old is Sturridge. Swift and direct with his movement and deadly with his execution, no dilly dallying.

A brilliant post eurored. What stood out for me was the 'DNA' analogy, it is spot on. We are losing our identity. If Brendan has even half a brain then he'll make sure he keeps Jamie on in a defensive coaching role. As for Gerrard, well F**k me, if he can't motivate players then nobody can.

One thing i will say for Brendan, he does realise the importance of keeping the Scouse heartbeat at the Club. Without it we are nothing.

I strongly believe most if not all the supporters in this forum will not shift loyalty to another team. Yes, they would still continue to support the club even with the lack of success in recent years. Older supporters like me whom has seen the successful years and now the not so successful years will not start to abandon my support for the club, it's something that won't happen for me. But I'm more worried of the new supporters coming though the pipeline, the more we are away from the limelight, we're simply going to get less or fewer new and younger supporters. And these figures multiply over the years.

Back in the 70s, 80s and even to the early 90s, I can only see supporters mostly wearing LFC jerseys. Now, it's manure, Man City, Chelsea Arsenal etc. Just goes to show that no matter what the owners say and do, it's ultimately down to success on the pitch and manure has learned that years ago. Continue winning, sponsorship increases and fan base enlarges by itself many times over. With that you get enough money to build a new stadium etc.

Evra has to be hauled in by the FA, as after all he is a Role Model and kids will think its okay for people to rip peoples arms are and have them on there shoulder.  Sarcastic yes?  But imagine if a Liverpool player has done that?  Different reaction.

But because they are the darlings of the Media they can do whatever they want.

What i find amusing is that no other club is talked about or vilafied as much as us.  Why?  Cause no matter how many titles they win, we are still the biggest and best club going.

I do feel now that the media are discriminating against Suarez, it is a kind of bullying into getting him sacked and it cannot go on.  I have emailed the FA about this as well as the Evra incident.  So my fellow reds follow suit  email the FA and help protect our player. yes he did wrong, but he does not deserve this much attention.

      FootballforAll@TheFA.com

Do are search on Luis Suarez there are over 260,000,000 articles about him.  Man U have 660,000,000 and thats for the whole club.  Shows you how much of a news story he is.

Saw it all in Chelsea game where we have fallen on the lowest level possible. History coming back to haunt us again in the likes of Rafa and Torres who I personally hate even more now for diving in that challenge with Carra where he got booked and screaming like he chopped off his leg. A player we used to love and gave him our full support. Just goes to show amount of disrespect we have earned. Rafa getting booed by his own fans, a man that was part of our successful history is being treated like garbage and he has no one to blame but himself.
Luis on the other hand is a symbol of passion this club lacks. A passion that needs to be transformed from coal to diamond.
Just look at it this way Luis like the club, just when he's on his way to the top goes on and just messes it up for him god knows why, like he just lost him self out there in a sea of passion he posseses.

I remember back talking to someone in college, making fun of the fact it felt like we were utter sh*te around 98/99ish and how it felt like we would never, ever get back in the European Cup again, never mind actually win the f**ker!!

Have a bit of F***ing faith, stop crying, don't get worked up watching those classless tw*ts down the road, just concentrate on the redmen and just hope it hurt those in charge of the club just as much as us.

It may only be me but i dont give a shiny sh*te about what that lot down the east lancs do, they could win a billion titles and i wouldnt flicker an eye lid.. I care about what happens with my club, i care about us getting a result and working our way back to the top again, until we win the title again i dont care who wins it..

Ive never ever spent time worry about them

We are Liverpool fans, say that to yourself and realise you're blessed to be so.. You're lucky to be born into this or make that choice your self, and to question that is mind boggling..

If we never won a title again and ended up in the blue square north my love for this club would be the same.

Brilliant article by Karl Coppack from The Anfield Wrap, sums up exactly how I feel.

      http://www.theanfieldwrap.com/2013/04/this-weekend's-lowest-point/

      THIS WEEKEND’S LOWEST POINT
      by TheAnfieldWrap // 24 April 2013 // 31 Comments
      By Karl Coppack

YOU can’t not enjoy a last minute equaliser. They’re glorious things and are great in either category – the deserved and the ‘how did we get away with that.’ Sunday’s helping was nice (thanks for doing your bit, Nando) and it arrived to give us a brief fillip at the end of a pretty miserable month for Liverpool. We haven’t kicked on since our good spell. A dig-in victory over Spurs followed by a return of three points from twelve has led to a loss of both momentum and a top six finish.

Add to this the latest Suarez pantomime and the ridiculous polar opposite opinions ranging from vilification to over-protection, from deportation to ‘what actually constitutes a bite’ and the result, once again, becomes secondary.  We know the game here. Go into work the next day and ask someone who the goal scorers were and there’ll be a brief ‘um’ and a chewing of a finger before answering. Ask for a view on Luis Suarez and information is much readily available. It finished 2-2 by the way.

Another leviathan sized dump lands in our laps again and statements are released, online apologies issued and the moralising takes full swing in any direction. Ian Ayre cancels his trip to Australia (Oz Harley Expo 2013), tells everyone that he’s cancelled it and tries to clear up another mess.
Meanwhile, with the waves of bile riding high in the nation’s stomach and questions asked of politicians and amusing Hannibal Lecter jpegs, Man United get on with the quiet business of securing their twentieth title. Not just won the title, of course but to do it possibly with a points record. They’ve won it at a canter and with, many believe, a pretty average side.

Jesus, they’ve won a lot of Leagues with average teams. I wish we had a few of those 85+ points sides. Hold on. I know an average side.
This isn’t going to be a revelation of a supposed United admiration or even grudging respect, my point is the opposite. For, conversely, the club should be focused on United by not being arsed about them and all that comes with their lionisation. Hear me out.

There are many reasons that United have been so successful over the last years, the obvious ones are manager longevity and a structure which is only rarely altered to ensure that the worst possible season tends to be a runners up spot. They do make bad buys but they’re hidden well. They sell at the right time too, mostly to Sunderland, to ensure that their squad is always hungry and hitting their peak at the same time. They’re well run, enjoy large crowds and are rich beyond the dreams of avarice. Apart from their debt which is seldom talked about in the press or by fans who are interested in winning things rather than spreadsheets.

      There’s another reason too.

      We let them.

For the simple case is that United’s dominance has been down to the utter mismanagement, back biting, paranoia and lack of focus of Liverpool FC. Okay, there are other reasons but as recently as 1991 we were level with them and, brief peaks aside, have allowed ourselves to fall away like Andy Gray’s career. A mate of mine reckons he can pinpoint the exact moment when we handed over the reins of English football. When Forest went down and the bigger clubs picked over the bones of the carcass they bought Keane, we bought Nigel Clough. Indeed.

That shift in power should burn away at the club every day, every hour and I’ve no doubt that it does to some extent but what are we actually doing about it? How do we go about knocking them off their f**king perch? Surely that’s a weekly discussion in the corridors of Anfield.
Excuses are easier to find than solutions. United get preferential treatments from refs, United have the FA in their back pocket, United tap players up and get away with it because the powers-that-be never question them. Of course they do. That’s what power’s for isn’t it? This is no longer a Corinthian game. When they need to be they are underhand, they refuse to speak to the media when their players let them down or are outraged at a media slight. They ban reporters from the grounds if they think that their words are not in the interest of the club. Ferguson runs the club as a despot. All nay-saying crushed until everyone’s on message. The result?

      They win things.

They won the League this year because, following the humiliation of last season, they never believed for one second that they couldn’t take it back.

And what do we do? Nothing. We swipe away at the destructive bees of transfer deadline f**k ups, embarrassing Cup exits, give away leads, play ten year olds, sack a Director of Communications for fighting with a mythical character and don’t get a win on the board till late September.
Now, I’m not advocating the use of United as a blueprint for success. I’m just pointing out that they have a focus that we don’t. The bas**rds.
Don’t get me wrong. I have no love for Man United and never will do. I find them and their fans unusually reprehensible in this most odious decade of the game. Actually, scratch that. I just don’t understand their fans. How you can watch your team win a record League title and then barely mention them in their songs? Guess who got central billing. I’m not criticizing that, I just find it odd.  How can Andy Carroll be a ‘Scouse b***ard’ while he was standing next to Wayne Rooney? If Ferguson is the greatest manager in their history, and he is, why don’t they sing about him? Logic can go and take a powder.

‘Ah, but they’re obsessed with us’ comes the obvious answer and of course they are. We represent their one true, non-City enemy and they’re doing well and want to shove it in our faces. Good. That’s how it should be and we make damn sure we give it back when we’re given the opportunity so this isn’t a one way street. There’s nothing wrong with a bit of ‘Are you watching Manchester?’ from the Ataturk. That’s to be expected but we told the world about what we’d won, who the manager was etc. More importantly, we don’t really sing anti-United songs to Norwich or Reading.

The obsession criticism is on shaky ground at times. There were a plethora of tweets about United but surely us pointing this out is just as bad. The main gist being that I’ve tuned in, heard what they were singing and am telling the world that they’re pathetic. Why turn up to that show at all?

I get that hating Liverpool comes free with any United support and vice versa but that obsession goes both ways and let’s not pretend otherwise. True, we sing about our team while they sing about seemingly everyone else’s (I thought they were singing ‘You’re not champions any more’ to Villa last night before I realised that they meant City. Some grudge that would have been) but that’s about it.

The football is a different matter altogether and I’m tired of the ‘yeah, but’ culture of fora and Twitter when we’ve played poorly or United do well. They said this, we said that. We’re better than them because. Jesus, wake up! We’re f**king seventh in the League! Seventh! Can we not address that first please? Man United, Chelsea, Torres, Gordon Taylor, Ollie Holt, Jeff Powell, the F.A. and all the other malodorous shitehawks who are the willing targets of our barbs did not put Liverpool in seventh place. Liverpool did. The swarming ephemera surrounding Luis Suarez does not stop Daniel Agger from marking his man at corners. United fans singing ‘always the victim’ to an empty ground does not stop the manager thinking that a one armed Joe Allen can stop Ricky Lambert on his own. It’s not about any of that. It’s about Liverpool f**king up. It’s about a shift of focus from the targets in May to putting out whatever fires we’ve created in our own backyard or the sheer complacency of a mini good run.

We’re great at spiralling. From Hicks and Gillett, to Rafa’s dismissal to Hodgson to Kenny’s millions to Kenny going to the worst start in decades to Suarez to Suarez we seem to love a slump. Is there any one man who is going to put their foot on the ball and think ‘Hang on, why don’t we start doing things better?’ One of my favourite goals is Steven Gerrard’s goal against Bolton in New Year’s Day 2002. We were looking to go top and we’re making heavy weather of getting through their defence. Gerrard stood on the edge of the box looking for runners and, and you can see it in his face, thought ‘F**k this’ and ran through the lot of them to put us one up. Who at the club is looking up and seeing that the usual every day strategy of how to get back to the top isn’t working? Who is going to stand up and say that this self-imposed Suarez sh*t is down to our own doing? Who is going to think that spending £150m and still having a wafer thin squad is a ridiculous position to be in? Who’s going to notice that we’re seventh and that this isn’t really progress?

Well, there’s another debate, another fight, another distraction. Pro Brendanites versus those who think John Henry is Satan’s bi*ch for sacking Kenny (hello). Everything comes with an agenda and by Christ I’ve got mine but once more we lose focus of the one thing that unites us – we all want Liverpool to do well. We may have different versions of what doing well actually is but we all want better than this. Personally, I never want to see a joyous lap of honour and a mosaic for fourth place. The thought of Ian Ayre gleefully throwing his cufflinks into the crowd makes me want to keck but the bottom line should never ever fade. We want to be where United are now. We want to succeed.

And that takes energy, from us as much as the players. If we leave the ground defeated I want our fans to be hoarse and our opposition to crawl off the pitch by their teeth through the sheer amount of work they’ve undergone to beat Liverpool. What I don’t want is to see the players looking at their feet by way of an apology and anodyne excuses from them and the manager that will sound empty the second it reaches the air.
So let’s forget this Suarez stuff. He’s guilty and he’s going to either serve a deserved ban or an inflated one to keep Patrick Barclay and his ilk happy. Fine. Get on with it. F**k them. Who wants to be liked by those people? Let’s get past it and tell Sturridge that he’s leading the line from now on and he’s got some boots to fill so get working. Does haranguing and harping stop United winning the title next season? It does not. Does it pull focus from the whole raison d’être of the club? Yes. Liverpool first, dramas second.

How about becoming more obsessed about where we’re going rather than being outraged about Patrice Evra holding a toy or whatever it was supposed to be in front of a Sky camera. There’s a bigger picture, a bigger vision and it’s not going to be realised while we’re concerned that some clubs, journalists and governing bodies don’t like us. F**k them all. They’re getting in the way so let’s do that Andy Dufrense walk through sh*t and come out with something worthwhile. Let’s have a proper Year Zero rather than convincing ourselves that our current strategy is working. It really isn’t. As annoying as the Suarez incident is, it isn’t the biggest shame of the weekend and that should be recognized by everyone connected to the club. Time to move on and let the other sh*t land where it may.

Brilliant article by Karl Coppack from The Anfield Wrap, sums up exactly how I feel.

      THIS WEEKEND’S LOWEST POINT
