Mohamed Salah will be assessed by Liverpool when he returns to Melwood tomorrow after the injury that has forced him to withdraw from Egypt’s squad.
Salah was substituted in the final minute of the 4-1 victory over eSwatini, formerly Swaziland, on Friday and will miss Tuesday’s return game in the African Cup of Nations with initial suggestions that he has suffered a groin problem.
He had scored direct from a corner in the first half, but required treatment in the 88th minute and, despite trying to play on, came off in stoppage time.
Liverpool’s medical team plan to check on Salah when he is back in the fold as they determine whether he will be available for next Saturday’s Premier League trip to Huddersfield Town.
The Champions League game with Red Star Belgrade follows four days later and then Liverpool host Cardiff City.
The forward has not scored at club level since scoring the third goal in a 3-0 victory over Southampton on September 22, with one of Liverpool’s triumvirate of Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane failing to score in four successive matches for the first time since they were brought together.
Liverpool are also continuing to assess James Milner, who was substituted in the opening half of the goalless draw with Manchester City last weekend with a hamstring injury.
Scans revealed a slight tear, but the issue is not thought to mean a lengthy period out.
Virgil van Dijk has also returned to Liverpool and will miss Holland’s game with Belgium in Brussels. The centre back, who opened the scoring in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Germany, has been troubled by a rib injury he aggravated against Southampton.
Van Dijk will be assessed along with Salah and Milner.
