Totally useless friendly or time to finding some gems amongst the stones?

      CARSON HANDED FIRST ENGLAND START

      Jimmy Rice 16 November 2007

Scott Carson, Peter Crouch and Steven Gerrard will start for England in their friendly against Austria on Friday night.

The out-on-loan Carson, who could soon make his move to Villa permanent, has been handed his first start by Steve McClaren following a tricky spell for regular number one Paul Robinson.

McClaren explained: "We are looking for different things from this game and different personnel.

"Scott Carson has been around the squad for a long time. His performances for Aston Villa have been very good and I have said all along that this is an ideal opportunity for him to experience international football."

Starting eleven: Scott Carson, Micah Richards, Sol Campbell, Joleon Lescott, Wayne Bridge, David Beckham, Steven Gerrard (c), Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Michael Owen, Peter Crouch.

Thought of watching this, but just checked the local papers and it says 4am. Fack that, I'm better off sleeping than watching them play.

      Goal!
      Austria 0 - 1 England

David Beckham's corner flies towards the centre of the goal, where the lanky Peter Crouch nods it down and in (just evading Jermain Defoe on the goal-line) with a minute to go before half-time.

Owen off injured in the match with a thigh strain.
Suggestions that he may be out for upto a month.

Obviously shitting himself with the impending Liverpool match coming up.

Class mrtommo...obviously...I haven't seen the game but it would be a good lesson for the F.A to see England not qualifying....

Have to agree there with you Cy...the FA seem like an organisation with it's head in the sand. The England team need sorting but not some quick fit by outing McClaren but a total review of all things England.

Having a friendly before one of the biggest games of the season for England is a joke that has only spelt injury for Owen, well done!
