Speaking of geeky, the diagrams indicate the Dortmund holding mid didn't drop back even with the center backs in build up the way ours does (Lallana in this case). I wonder if that is correct about them when he was there
That particular formation looks 4231 rather than 433, so more a box formation centrally like this;

We use the same formation some games, and chnge to it from 433 in some matches, depending on what's happening.
It looks more defensive, but is actually more attacking because the FB push up further.
It's also worth noting that these are not really set positions in the traditional sense, but more like guidelines for the basic shape, which in turn is fluid, and is meant to provide an idea of the platform he wants for attacking.
When the players drill in these formations constantly, it becomes like muscle memory, and fluidity increases, with the idea being that certain situations should be dealt with (or moved into) seamlessly.
It's why I don't get hung up on starting formations.
