Your signings for £30 million (including VAT)
      May 05, 2008 01:20:06 pm
I have read today on the SkySports website (http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11669_3517988,00.html) that Rafa has agreed a transfer budget with Tom Hicks of approximately £30 million for this summer. After all the speculation about who we'd like to buy, for which positions and for which amount of money, it would be interesting to see who we all who choose to buy for this amount. Whether or not this amount includes any money we may make from player sales is not mentioned, so if you want to play it easy and add a bit more (justified by realistic sales figures) you can, if you want to play it tough (or realistic  :o) by assuming this amount is included in the £30 million it's up to you!

      Here's my effort:

In: David Villa (we're allowed to dream  ;D) - £25 million
           Amantino Mancini - £4 million
           David Bentley - £15 million
Gareth Barry - £10 million (+ Scott Carson)

           Total: £54 million

Out: Peter Crouch - £10 million
             JAR - £4 million
             Dirk Kuyt - £6 million

             Total £20 million
            Net spending: £34 million

      Leaving a starting XI:

                                                Reina

      Finnan/Arbeloa      Carra/Skrtel       Agger/Hyppia      Barry/Aurelio

                                Mascherano       Alonso/Lucas

      Bentley/Pennant                  Gerrard                     Babel/Mancini

                                            Torres/Villa

It's easy enough to see that with these new additions we could play a more traditional 4-4-2 or 4-3-3, lots of these players are versatile enough to change position, I just fitted them into the 4-2-3-1 layout because it's what we've favoured at the backend of this season. I don't want anyone banging on about me selling Crouch either, after all I'm not manager and this is only for a laugh!

This is interesting, hope its true. Still not quite the amount like United and Chelsea get but its a start I guess.

      sell:

      Crouch 8 mil
      Riise 5 mil
      Voronin 5 mil
      Carson 10 mil
      Pennant 6 mil

      = 34mil, that's 64 mil to play with.

      I'd go for:

      Barry 10mil
      Bentley 15mil
      Villa 25 mil (dreaming)
Rodriguez or Silva 14 mil (dreaming and unsure on what their price would be)

Total = 64 mil (wow that worked out nicely ;))

just imagine the squad for next season!

                                                Reina/Itan

      Finnan/Arbeloa      Carra/Skrtel       Agger/Hyppia      Barry/Aurelio

                                Mascherano/Plessis       Alonso/Lucas

      Bentley/Kuyt                Gerrard/Beneyoun                   Babel/Rodriguez

                                            Torres/Villa

On second thoughts, who do you think would be better or more achievable realistically, Silva or Rodriguez?...

And we've got those 3 South Americans and Degen who apparently has already signed... So actually god knows what the hell is going to happen during this transfer period, as we could see one of the biggest clear outs the club has seen for along time. I hope I'm right though because this is the sort of team that we need to win the title.

No way will we have a £30m net to spend this summer, I just can't see it myself.

I think £30m is including the players we've agreed to sell. Can only see us spending £15m net this summer.

With £30m to spend I'd have to go for just two players, either Quaresma or Silva and Mancini.

£30m isn't much seeing that we spend more than that last season. Torres £21m, Babel £11m, Lucas £6m & Benayoun £5m coming to a total of £43m maybe even more...

Reading the original article, £30m does seem to be a figure Sky have just plucked out the air, no-one's quoted as having mentioned that figure so I wouldn't read too much into it. Working on the assumption that the figure is correct though, I would go for:

      OUT

      Voronin - £2m
      Pennant - £5m
      Riise - £5m
      Carson - £8m

      Total - £20m

      In

      Villa - £25m
      Barry - £10m
      Mancini - £4m
      Bentley - £12m
      Degen - Free

      Total £51m

The arrivals of Barry & Mancini would see another couple of quality versatile players at the club, with Barry able to play anywhere on the left & in centre mid, and Mancini able to play any attacking role and also having played at right back earlier in his career (not the greatest right back from memory but an option nonetheless should we get hit with injuries). When you consider the different positions many of our players can play we would be left with plenty of potential options for every position on the pitch:

      Left Backs

      Barry
      Aurelio
      Arbeloa
      Insua

      Centre Backs

      Carragher
      Skrtel
      Agger
      Hyypia
      Arbeloa

      Right Backs

      Arbeloa
      Degen
      Finnan
      Carragher
      Mancini?

      Left Mid

      Barry
      Babel
      Mancini
      Benayoun

      Centre Mid

      Gerrard
      Alonso
      Mascherano
      Lucas
      Barry

      Right Mid

      Bentley
      Mancini
      Benayoun
      Babel
      Gerrard

      Attacking Mid

      Gerrard
      Babel
      Mancini
      Bentley
      Benayoun

      Strikers

      Torres
      Villa
      Crouch
      Kuyt
      Babel
      Mancini

I believe this squad would allow us to play pretty much any formation we choose without having to try & fit any square pegs into round holes. It would also allow for injuries, we could afford to lose quite a few players from that squad & still be able to put out a strong lineup. If we'd lost Gerrard & Torres for a large chunk of this season it could well have screwed us, it wouldn't be half as bad if you could play an attacking four of Babel, Mancini, Bentley & Villa as an alternative though ;)

Thanks for all your replies so far! I agree with your first point there Eddie, I looked at the article, and did notice that there wasn't even a mention of a "nameless" source for the figure of £30 million, but was wondering what kind of team we would be able to assemble with that amount. I also agreed with Ra Ra that the sum would probably include money made from player sales, because that is the way Gillett and Hicks have operated in the past when "buying" players. But it did make me think we could put together a very strong and versatile first team for that amount.

The important thing is that rafa does need to act fast and get players signed for us in the next couple of weeks as he has been quoted as saying, else the other big clubs in England and Europe will price us out of all our first choices in no time, leaving us with some poorer seconds once again. I'm still not convinced we'll sign Villa for any amount (prove me wrong Rafa! ;)), but even with another strong forward the line-up looks pretty sweet.

Plus with the players we have all mentioned, we would be less likely to be left wanting in the event that our first choices got injured or banned for important games. So many have the qualities to cover one another that our formation could adapt more easily, making it possible to compete more effectively in all competitions, without losing out in the title race.

I'm not sure how much I would sell them for but anyway

      Sell
      Crouch
      Voronin
      Carson
      Risse

I think I would buy a strike partner as kuyt now seems to be on the wing.
      Buy
      Villa - £25m
      Bentley - £12m
      Amantino Mancini - £4 million

I can't see Voronin generating much of a fee so i've left him out.  Also i wouldn't mind holding onto Benayoun as a squad player.

Sounds very good but only two things i think would stop us is prices of Silva and Zambrotta, i couldnt see Silva going for any less than £17-20 million even though valencia are in a terrible position in the league. And zambrotta just seems like he would be valued at more than £6 million. Other than that looks very good would be shocked and delighted to get silva at that price.

I think that a 30m pound budget is very reasonable and feel that will probably be about the sort of figure DIC will put straight into the squad. Which added with the outgoing players will add up to just over 50m.  Obviously a lot will depend on the players available and the prices, if some very good offers will be available then maybe we may see that little extra push, after all I will expect to firstly make sure of the stadium.  Throwing too much money on arrival will inflate our future purchases.  Obviously if the Americans are still here then at best I only expect 30m including the revenue from players sold.

      Outgoings

      Crouch - if he doesn’t sign = £10m
      Riise = £4m
      Carson = £8m
      Voronin = £2m
      Pennant = £5m
Kewell = £00 But a massive burden off our medical bill and a saving of £3m in wages.

      Total 29m

      IN

Bentley – Must make sure of this deal = £14m
      Barry -  £12m

      Manchini - £4m
      David Villa - £25m – Dreaming a little though!

      TOTAL = £55M

If we don’t get villa and Mancini and keep Crouch, get a world class left winger.

;D. To be honest i was just really making a list of the players i'd like us to go for. I wasnt really thinking much about the prices. I atill stick with my outgoing players. More realisticly i reckon

      20 million for Villa
      15 million for Bentley
      9 million for Johnson
      16 milion for Barry

      OK this looks fun actually:

      Out

Voronin - 1 million (with some luck :lmao:)
      Crouch - 11 million
      Riise - 5 miillion
      Carson - 10 million
      Xabi - 18 million (unfortuantly)
      Itanje - 3 million

      Total - 48 million

      In

      Mati Fernandez - 14 million
      Philip Degan - Bosman
      Steve Harper - 500k
Insua - 1 million (I think he is still on loan)
      Henry Saivet - 500k
      Gabriel Torje - 1 million
      Lulinha - 18 million
      Villa - 25 million
      Micah Richards - 22 million

      Net Spending - 28million (i think ;D)

You have been playing way too much football manager mate, I'm not accepting any other explanation for suggesting Torje, Saivet & Lulinha (all turn out to be superstars in the game for anyone that doesn't play FM).
