Just to add a bit of Clarity to our net spend in 2009/10 Rafa's final season.

      2009/10 Transfers In

      £17.5m – Glen Johnson
      £17.1m - Alberto Aquilani
      £2m – Sotirios Kyrgiakos
      £160,000 – Daniel Ayala
      Free - Maxi Rodriguez

      Total bought: £36.76m

      2009/10 Transfers Out

      Free - Sami Hyppia
      £250,000 – Paul Anderson <--- £250,000 profit
      Free – Jermaine Pennant <--- £6.7m loss
Free – Miki Roque  <---- £0m profit or loss
      £3m – Sebastian Leto  <---- £1.15m profit
      £3.5m – Alvaro Arbeloa. <--- £900,000 profit
      £30m – Xabi Alonso <----- £20m profit
      £4.5m - Andrea Dossena <------ £2.5m loss
      £1.8m - Andrei Voronin <----- £1.8m profit

      Total sold: £43.05m

Making an overall profit on his own buys of £15.6m

The Glen Johnson deal we were owed £7m from Portsmouth from the Peter Crouch deal so basically we spent £29.76m of the money recouped from the 2009/10 season sales.

That gives Rafa Benitez a Net spend of minus £13.29m.

If you take the initial payment of Aquilani was only £5m the rest being paid on certain dates in the following two seasons from the club that means a further £12.5m went missing from what we had recouped in sales.

That means Messrs Hicks and Gillett made off with £25.34m that season add to that what you'd expect for a transfer budget say £20m thats £45.34m that could and should have been invested in the squad following our second place finish in 08/09.

Had that investment been forthcoming perhaps we'd have got that quality striker to assist Torres or cover during his injury lay offs, perhaps we'd have got a tricky winger ala David Silva, perhaps we'd have had a better season and built on the previous seasons progress ?

But lets just Blame Rafa eh.

Just a footnote Daz but let's not forget also who we have to thank for the lad Raheem Sterling who is heralded as a superstar in the making.

What on earth does that have to do with the Youth Academy?

I'm sure there are other topics that discuss Rafa's transfer dealings, this one isn't about that, however.

Still the argument remains the same, the owners syphoned away money from the club that undermimed our previous years campaign, no one can argue with that fact.

      Just Saying. ;)

When you finish second in the league, like we did uner Rafa in 08/09 then you really do need to capitalise on that.

Big, massive, HUGE named players are suddenly availiable and interested, willing to sign thinking Liverpool have a chance of top place, champions league, the cups.

It was a year when we needed to kick on in order to win the league, instead the pair of pricks took money away from this side.

      Disgraceful.

No it's using the dismissal of Gerard Houllier's claims that it was his team that one the Champion's League to suggest we should dismiss Rafa Benitez's involvement in the overhaul of the youth system.

If there is anyone that needs to understand something here it's you, but I'm not about to waste my time trying to enlighten you on the vast improvement in our youth setup

Hang on, you called me a "hater" of Rafa for giving him full credit when we won the CL? You're powers of reasoning are most bizarre.

"Superstars in the making" are ten a penny. Let's not make ourselves look foolish by jumping the gun.

      About sums you up.

You're just a wind up merchant.

The article was about the legacy Rafa left.
      Rodolfo Borrell
      Jose Segura
Both men have had an immediate impact at youth level. Try dealing with that subject matter instead of ignoring other posts in some bizarre quest to have a petty little argument with me

As far as I can tell, the point of this artcle was to point out that Rafa had revolutionized The Academy, Praise for Borrell & how it's progrssing aside, as that belongs in the appropriate thread.  It needed doing, we'd not produced anyone of note for years.  As far as I'm concerned, Rafa has been our best manager we've had in the last 20 years, excluding the current incumbent, but some people seem to prefer to pick on the bloodied scabs that were his flaws, which even those who recognize the talents of Rafa, admit he had, but they are far outweighed, for me, by his positives.

Shame this couldn't have just discussed the work Rafa had done for our youth set-up, including bringing Kenny back in to the fold, and then went on to discuss the progress in The Academy.

Sorry Racer, but thread locked since it has been ruined by petty arguments and people's inabilities to discuss the matter in question.
