      Out, Injured!
      Jan 05, 2009 05:29:40 am
Over the last few years, being a proud Aussie, I was rapped to see our home grown imports do so well in the Premiership.
However, just as they seemed to dominate, they tended to constantly get injured.

This ruined match fitness and momentum on many an occasion, namely our Harry :f_steam:

A pattern developed in not only Kewell, but continued on with Viduka and then Cahill. Whenever they have been on the park, they are usually influential, but never really have a long string of games in a row.

What perplexes me is that in Oz, our sportsmen are bred tough. Our cricketers for years have been hard nuts. Our Rugby League players are rock hard (bar 1 game! :-[ :-[ :-[ )

We have also had good boxers, athletes of all kinds who tough it out without too much whingeing (excluding Ponting).

So why do a host of our players fall down in the EPL with feather touches, or are out with papercuts and a whole host of other innocuous injuries.
Had it not been for the 2 dreaded words: Septic Athritis ( What the hell is that anyway? Was Harry tossing on the toilet?), we probably would've crept past Italy in the last World Cup.

Is it all just a coincidence or are we soft footballers?

Are there any other Nationalities in the past that can be labelled as soft?

Its the 'top' footballers in his country that you hear get injured. Look at the A-League and there's no clear injury prone player like Harry was/is and then look to other players overseas like Spiranovic and co. and there's nothing wrong with them. I dont know how to explain it but something is going on with our big name players in England.

I know but you wear all them helmets and gumshields and stuff.  I've seen it... ;)

Actually it's probably the case in Australia that the likes of Cahill and Kewell were too scared of the games you just mentioned.

Easy Aussie boys, we all know that you're 'real men'...

Helmets? No. Unless they have some health problem they go without. Much like Petr Cech.

I'll admit, Brits guzzle down more pints but its not like we cant handle it. Atleast we're not dumb enough to chase cheese down a hill... :f_whistle:

Although we are starting to steal some Irish talent and transform them into Aussie Rules players. I think late last year was the most competitive i have seen it.

No mate.  Australians are far too clever to mess around with dumb sports aren't they?

Smoothly does it - a team of Australian scuba divers has flattened their way in to the record books for ironing under water.

The seventy-two-strong team submerged with all the gear required for their underwater housekeeping: ironing boards, irons - with the electrical cords removed for safety reasons - and their clean linen.

"Extreme ironing" has become something of a cult in recent years, with "ironists" taking their chores to places as inhospitable as the Antarctic, the bottom of a Welsh bog, and in the middle of a go-kart race at Streatham Raceway.

The Australian underwater ironists topped the previous record of seventy participants in their 3-metre (10 foot) deep dive off the coast of Melbourne, south-east Australia, on Saturday.

"It was cold and I think they were bloody crazy," said local councillor Tom O'Connor, who with police helped authenticate the new record.

Debbie Azzopardi, who organised the event, said that the attempt beat a 2005 record set in a swimming pool in nearby Geelong, which had itself beaten a New Zealand group's earlier record.

"I was having a chardonnay a few years ago with a girlfriend, and I thought 'I'm going to beat that'", Azzopardi said.

"We had a few fish going by, and a stingray. It was great,"

Whats that? We kill you in everything despite a smaller population?

And you want stupid? Paul Mccartney and Heather Mills' divorce, your queen farts constantly and a Brit invented a device to help a mother give birth by spinning around on a table.

Whereas we invent stuff like this:

The Iron Saddle, an upside down iron that heats your ass if it gets cold while riding your bike.

Not to mention, everyone loves Aussies. We're the easy going 'g'day-ers'.

To be honest, we invented virtually every global sport.  Most of these were nicked and bastardised by the colonies (mostly you and America).  The fact that we are crap at them is well documented - instead of concentrating on one or two, we try to master them all - and fail miserably.  If our government had spunked the amount yours has on sports excellence centres, we might have a chance.

Paul McCartney's divorce - who cares?
As you're still part of the Commonwealth (you still take part in the Commonwealth Games) we share a Queen (she's not head of state in my country, either).
I've no idea what the birthing device you mention is but there's probably a need for it or it wouldn't have been invented.
Is that seat warmer the best you could find?  I don't fancy sitting on a lump of warm metal while out riding - the things you colonials get up to... ;)

"Everyone loves Aussies."  Have you asked everyone?   :f_whistle:

In WW1 Australia developed a reputation to be the toughest and bravest but their strength was tied down by the leadership of General Haig, a Brit.

Actually, Haig was so stupid he kept on sending troops over the top (his British troops, mind) in a line as a cavlary charge, what made this worse was that it was in daylight leaving them as a clear target and an easy one at that. They got slaughtered yet he continued to shell the Germans, stop and then go over the top. Once the Germans heard the shelling stop, they knew that they were coming over the top so they gunned millions of Brits down. Haig did not change his tactics though and has been described as one of the worst leaders ever, the show Blackadder with Rowan Atkinson is based on Haig's incompetence.

Compare this to the Aussie's who were the first to employ the tactic of attacking in the dark to catch their opponent by surprise. It was Sir John Monash who thought of it first, an aussie. Add that to the famous 'Jacka's men'.

Worse than that, Haig also decreed that the men should not run at the enemy but walk in orderly fashion towards the German lines which were manned with Mauser machine guns.

      Tactical genius.

Over the last few years, we have scattered our seeds all over Europe in large numbers and will see them come to fruition in years to come.
We will rid ourselves of that soft footballer tag and dominate in bigger numbers.

We've Lorded it in most sports that we compete against you in, and it's only a matter of time until we will pull the Three Lions' pants down.

      Fair enough. Will do.

Stevie is as hard as they come. Muscat could probably match him in hardness of tackle but the c**t would try and break a leg whereas Stevie does it cleanly.

My God do the Poms love to stir up sh*t when they come to Sydney's beaches in summer or what??!!

As i live within the proximity of these beaches Coogee and Bondi it is well documented amongst locals here that between the months of November and Februaary we are to expect another load of drunken rowdy poms who love to get their heads kicked in on a daily basis. No offense to all the ladies on here but not to mention the ugly easy women they bring with them.

Can one of you down there explain the term POM to me?

As far as I remember it is a reference to the prisoners we sent to Oz who eventually became your population.  Is this right?

Come on now you lot down under.

The vast majority of you wouldn't be enjoying the sunshine while we're all freezing our tits off if it wasn't down to your old mother country.  :f_whistle:

Actually, out of interest and I'm actually not taking the piss now, but with such a relatively short history for your country I'm wondering what historical records are like over there.  Do people generally have their family history's fully mapped out or not?

Shay the word POME around the 17th and 18th century was used to identify somebody as a Prisone of Mother England. However in the Aussie urban dictionary we use the word POM and it originates from the term   "pomegranate", relating to the purported frequency of sunburn among British people in Australia, turning their fair skin the colour of pomegranates. Hence we have things like Irirsh sun tans in our dictionary also describing someone that has passed out drunk on Bondi beach and woken up sun burnt to the sh*t house.

As far as that is concerned Alastair my friend I am sorry but is that not what you English did through the course of history in your quest for colonisation? Yes rape the indigenous women and slaughter their men. Its a little different down here we dont want to slaughter your men but the issue is exactly what is bein demonstrated by some on here. The ignorant attitude that we are a bunch of descendents of petty thieves and convicts and that gives you some given right to staunch every Aussie bloke run around actling like a complete goon. Well I think over the years some sort of evolutionary process has taken place where we have stood up to your sh*t and put you on your ass. (In fact after Thailand we are the second most dangerous travelling destination for Britons, it wasnt always like that) As for the women mate dont take no offence they arent lookers in any sense but all it takes is a few rounds of schooners and you are in easy as that.

Croucinho mate just post that great Bundy ad thats been running on telly  says it all really. I cant get on to youtube from work.

      My pleasure mate:

      http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=0OidSD14mGE

Your very right about our colonisation, the English are the ones who bashed indigenous women and killed their husbands so they could make Australia white. The White Australia policy came about under Australian government but as we all know, Australia didnt make all its own decisions up untill the 1980's.

Coincidence that once we distanced ourselves from English ruling, ie. no more appealling to the Privvy Council and being able to run our government 100% independently, we have started to become a major force internationally. We arent there to serve and protect a country that does nothing for our safety.

How many Brits are migrating to Australia? Thousands each year due to quality of life. Its cheaper, safer and much more outdoory.

There is no competition here, every flaw we have or once had is because of the English influence but now we're a better country.

Mate I dont care where you are from  I was responding to your comment. I am not an Aussie myself I migrated there from Croatia 14 years ago but I feel the need to defend a great country that has given me so much.

As for this "we are scouse" alot of scousers on here have commented on the topic taking the piss out of OZ. On that note I havent met a lot of scousers in person all the doosh's that come down here seem to be from London or so they say anyway. When I tell them I am LFC fan there comments are always the same why support that scouse scum then something about crime, theft and unemployment is always attached to that argument. That is the point where I back away because I dont know the social status of scousers and have never experienced the area personally.

First of all mate, I'm sure most Aussies are rapped to be just that, and don't wish to be Scouse.

Secondly, if you kept LFC to yourselves, then it would be downright criminal because keeping this majestic organisation to yourselves, the whole planet would have been deprived the chance to be awestruck, inspired and entertained for so long, so stop your selfish talk! ;)

That Bundy ad is a corker, and all you lads out there secretly know that. Choice beaches were shown. :lmao: :lmao:

As for the crack about English birds guys, I think you are wrong from my experience. I was in London recently, in the suburb of Kensington, and I nearly suffered whip-lash from all the stunning lasses gliding by. :o

Sorry for again turning this into a us v them argument but Melbourne has nothing on Sydney, any celebrity in Australia goes to Sydney first and stays there. But no turning on your own kind.

As for wishing to be Scouse, no. I'm proud of my past and everything and content with where i come from and although i love Liverpool with all my heart i dont overly wish to be a local.

I posted a couple of points just to wind people up.

In any case, as has been said before, and this may be of educational purposes for some Aussies who follow the reds:

The majority of scousers do not see themselves as English first.  The antipathy towards the England football team is enormous on Merseyside.  If you ever follow an international discussion etc you will see that the closer the Liverpool fan is to Liverpool itself - generally the least interested they will be.  When Gerrard didn't get the England captaincy a good number of us were pleased.

There was a clampdown on St. George's flags, Irish flags etc amongst the reds support recently - you may recall the 'Keep Flags Scouse' campaign.  In the vast majority of people's opinion there is nothing much worse at Anfield than seeing the Union Jack or the cross with Liverpool or a Liver bird on it.

(Although having said all that - bring on the Ashes!)

^^^ I find myself loathing the national team too, dont really give a sh*t about them. I watch but usually switch the channel before half time.

As for the Ashes, you lot just won by cheating. How do you expect to win with your hierarchy in dismay and no chance of tampering with the ball again? Oh yeah, by trying to pip our best bolwer in history but hey, he said no.

Wrestling crocodiles is why we're tough its also why london is full of blokes with boney girl arms because the only animals there are to wrestle are foxes and weasels and as for the dingoes we dont have them as pets they are just simply scapegoats in court trials.

Never thought I'd see my hometown mentioned on this site!......

I was quite shocked a few years ago when a Canadian singer/songwriter called Jane Siberry mentioned "the slags of Merthyr Tydfil" in a song. I was so intrigued I e-mailed her to find out if she had a connection...she told me her Grandfather was from there if I remember rightly.

Just for the record, I am from Swansea but lived and worked in the Valleys at times many moons ago and know Merthyr fairly well. I'm in Canada now.

This was probably the best thread of banter i can recall. All the Ashes chat has just reminded of how good the Pom v Convict humour can be.

Its a really interesting fact that the Aussies playing in England have largely been injury prone.
      eg   Viduka-Kewell- Cahill-Emerton-

Not so sure about Lucas Neil and Mark Schwarzer, someone may have to help me on those

I remember arriving in Australia from England at age 7 and have lived there for the past 40 years. In that era we took our soccer ball to school and there were no soccer goal posts so we had to put down jumpers as goal posts. In physical education classes occasionally we were allowed to play soccer, because we had an English born teacher, although it was normally aussie rules footy due to it being the national game here.

What used to happen was because the aussie kids were so uncoordinated playing soccer they would kick the sh*t out of you when they went in for a tackle, and they didnt like us poms too much because we would make them look pretty silly when we popped the ball thru their legs and ran around them leaving them spreadeagled on the ground after losing their balance. So maybe our aussies in England are still carrying those knocks from such experiences, well its just a theory.

Then you had days where you took a soccer ball to school and played soccer in your playtime. You recruited all the Italians, Greeks, Yugoslavs, and whatever poms you could muster and you just about had 5 a side, so the jumpers went down. The problem was that often you got set upon by 30 aussies wanting your ball because they didnt have the intelligence to remember to bring a footy to school.

One kid called Charlie, they would set upon, and often about 20 of them chased him wanting to bash him senseless. Because he lived close to the school he would run home and not come back for a couple of days, feeling too scared until the heat died down. He had Italian parents who couldnt speak English, and he would bluff them that there was an excursion on that he wasnt attending so there was no need for him to attend school on those days. It was all quite a laugh when you look back on it, but pretty scary at the time.

So we joined our local soccer club, Springvale City, and this was the place to find all the brits and europeans, a place of safety to practice our religion (football) My brothers and I played for many years, I was a striker who racked up plenty of goals playing club soccer. One team we regularly used to play was Doveton, where there were a lot of Aussie kids who had strangely adopted our game, but in truth we were back to the school days playing them, and once again we would get the sh*t kicked out of us. I always remember my dear old dad telling me to wear double shin pads the day we played Doveton.

Further reinforcement of my theory, perhaps this is where Cahill, Viduka and co all got their legs kicked to hell before migrating to England.   ;D

I know I wasn't around back then so I dont know if I can be totally accurate but similarly to your theory they may have picked up some injuries playing sport however it could of been when they were playing aussie rules not soccer. I know in primary school when we'd have interschool matches even at age 10 and 11 it was really rough I know I picked up a few knee injuries from landing awkwardly after getting tackled I even got hit pretty hard in the face once and rocked up to school on the monday with a bright purple eye but that's another story.

Another theory Ive just had on this is the fine Aussie tradition of "taking a sickie off work"

Perhaps because of the good weather out here most golf courses during the week are full of people who have taken the "sickie" and preferred a day out on the golf course to going to work.

Maybe the great Aussie tradition of the "sickie" has been bred into these guys and thats why they are often a sick note.

I've only just seen your post. :D

Anyway, you knew you were going to lose the Ashes so you just bumped this topic anyway. Lying isn't a good thing. ;)
