      Bernard Diomede retires
      Jan 18, 2008 09:05:12 pm
A sad day for everyone connected with the club...

      From Teamtalk

Former France midfielder Bernard Diomede has announced his retirement after being without a club for the past 18 months

Diomede, who made three appearances for Les Bleus as France claimed the World Cup in 1998, has been searching for a new club since leaving Clermont Foot in June 2006 but has now decided to call it a day.

The 33-year-old started his career at Auxerre - where he won the domestic league and cup double in 1996 - before an unproductive spell at English giants Liverpool and stints at Ajaccio and US Creteil.

Bernard was signed by RafaHoullier in 2000 for £3 million.  He sensationally scored an overhead kick on his debut for the reds against Sunderland but it was incorrectly ruled as not having crossed the line.  Such a shame - he really could have kicked on from there to become the next Jimmy Carter.

He played in 5 games for the reds (which includes 3 substitute appearances).  A true Liverpool legend I think we can all agree.

      Good luck to the lad.

Really? But agreed that he is a true LFC legend, up there with the likes of Leto. Also, he was signed by Houllier, not Rafa (seeing as it was 2000 ;D)

'Signed by Rafa in 2000' ???

Anyway, moving swiftly on. Legend, hero, gentleman, there simply aren't enough superlatives to describe this king amongst men. He was a class act in every sense, and my life is richer for having seen him play.

Bang out of order. Once again I've spilled a drink over the keyboard. (I missed the warning)

My best memeory of the little fella was seeing him fall over a ball in the warm up. Wasn't his fault though.

Edited my original post. Of course he was signed by Houllier not Benitez.  Oops.

Agree with Eddie though - still struggling to come to terms with it all.

A sad sad day. Would love to see him as a coach here. I think our midfield 4 would really learn alot from him.

Kleenex have got a boost in sales after the shock news that is Bernard Diomede's career is over. The days of him trotting past balls and falling over them during practice are gone now and all we have are the images in our heads of the legend that is Bernard. Just came to terms with why we let him go, now this. Goodbye cruel world...

Fair play to the man, he pulled on the Red jersey and played at anfield, something that I would give my right testicle for!
