3-3. The guy is massive. His strength looks a bit much for our back four.

Nemeth off for Crowther. Simon goes up top.

What a mess for their goal! don't think Mendy will ever make it into the senior squad, very eratic.

DEGEN RETURNS FOR RESERVES IN HULL
      Jimmy Rice 23 April 2009
Philipp Degen is set to return to action tonight after being named on the bench for Liverpool Reserves' trip to Hull. You can watch the game live online via LFC TV from 6.30pm BST.
The right-back should feature at some stage after his latest injury set-back.

Gary Ablett's team in full is:

      Martin Hansen
      Stephen Darby (Captain)
      Robbie Threlfall
      Mikel San Jose Dominguez
      Godwin Antwi
      Damien Plessis
      Ryan Crowther
      Jay Spearing
      Andras Simon
      Gerardo Bruna
      Gary Mackay-Steven

      Substitutes:

      Krisztian Nemeth
      Deale Chamberlain
      Victor Palsson
      Vitor Flora
      Philipp Degen

Another game for the reserves tonight, coming so close to the Bolton game.

Degen on the bench  :o let's hope if he does get some playing time tonight, he manages to stay injury free, I've gotta feel sorry for the lad, it must be soooooo frustrating for him.

Good luck Philipp, if you do get on tonight.

Nemeth on the bench as well......can't really say I'm surprised, his confidence has been missing recently.

I think basically we have to write this season off, not been a good one in comparison to last season, head's up over the summer lads, and take next season by storm.

This must be about the last match of the season is it?

Come on Lads, let's get a win tonight.

Bizarre watching the reserves play in daylight isn't it.

Here's a stream anyway for anyone wanting to watch. Not the best quality though.

Bit of a dodgey first half but once we got level we looked more confident and that carried on through the second half.

2-1 to our lads. A win at last! Plessis and Bruna on the score sheet. Spearing limped off just before the end with an ankle problem though. Hopefully it was just a knock. Amazingly, Degen did not...  ;)

REDS OFF BOTTOM AS BRUNA SINKS HULL

      James Carroll 23 April 2009

Liverpool reserves moved off the bottom of the Barclays Premier Reserve League North courtesy of a 2-1 victory over Hull City at North Ferriby United FC.
The Reds move ahead of the Tigers in the table thanks to a superior goal difference.

Goals from Damien Plessis and Gerardo Bruna sealed the win after Jamie Devitt had given the home side a first-half lead from the penalty spot.

It was a deserved victory for the Reds, who will now look to end their campaign on a high against Newcastle United next week.

Gary Ablett made four changes to the team that lost against Bolton Wanderers last time out.

Robbie Threlfall was handed a start at left-back for his first reserve appearance of the season following his loan spell with Hereford United. In fact, the Scouser's last run out for the Reds' second string came in the second-leg of the Youth Cup Final with Manchester United in 2007.

Damien Plessis returned to the centre of midfield while Ryan Crowther and Gary Mackay-Steven were also drafted into the starting line-up.

There was a place amongst the substitutes for Swiss international Philipp Degen.

On a pleasant evening in the quaint town of North Ferriby, Liverpool kicked off hoping to put Monday's disappointment behind them and leapfrog their hosts in the table.

However, Hull fired an early warning as striker Ryan Kendall brought a save out of Martin Hansen with an effort from the edge of the box after less than two minutes on the clock to force a succession of corners for the home team.

It was from their second corner that Godwin Antwi just cleared his own crossbar as he attempted to head away a ball back into the box.

Liverpool's first chance of note arrived in the tenth minute when Crowther's corner was headed over the bar by Andreas Simon from close-range. It was a genuine let off for a Hull side that had enjoyed a sprightly opening.

The visitors had a penalty appeal waved away moments later when Crowther skipped away from Joe Lamplough into the area, only to go down under the challenge of the Tigers' left-back. The referee instantly waved play on.

Hull were inches away from taking the lead with a well worked corner on 15 minutes as Nicky Featherstone's hooked effort from a half-cleared corner just shaved the upright.

It was end to end stuff as Macaky-Steven then drilled wide of the near post following some good build-up playing involving Jay Spearing and Simon as Liverpool took their turn to threaten.

However, Hull were awarded a penalty on 26 minutes. Lamplough's ball into the box was only headed half-clear by Antwi, allowing Devitt to collect possession. The winger skipped to the area, but was brought down under a challenge by Threlfall.

It was to be Devitt to take the spot-kick and he made no mistake, calmly dispatching the ball into the bottom corner, sending Hansen the wrong way in the process.

It could have been worse for Ablett's men seconds later as Devitt's accurate cross picked out Mark Cullen, but the striker's header from ten yards was straight down the throat of Hansen.

Cullen was left to rue his miss as, with just two minutes of the half remaining, Plessis marked his return to the team with a thumping strike from distance.

Collecting possession just inside the Tigers' half, the former Lyon man strode forward before drilling a low shot beyond the reach of goalkeeper Tom Woodhead into the bottom right corner to send the two sides into the interval on level terms.

Gerardo Bruna almost ensured the Reds picked up where they left off at the start of the second period as the forward's swerving strike flew narrowly over the crossbar.

The Argentina-born forward did find the back of the net on 57 minutes, however.

A lightening quick Liverpool break from a Hull corner saw Spearing surge into the opponents half. The Reds captain cleverly delayed his pass before playing the ball into space, allowing Bruna to go clear on goal and dispatch a low shot under the exposed Woodhead.

The second half was a much more open affair and Simon tried his luck on a couple of occasions prior to Bruna steering a shot into the side netting after fine work by Threlfall.

With twenty minutes remaining, Degen was handed a run out by Ablett, replacing Mackay-Steven to take up a role on the right of midfield following his recovery from injury, as a flurry of substitutions disrupted the rhythm of the game.

Liverpool were forced to see out the dying moments with ten men after Spearing left the field to receive treatment following a typically robust challenge.

However, Hull were unable to trouble Hansen as the visitors claimed all three points.

The result, the Reds's first league win since January, sees Ablett's side move ahead of Hull by virtue of a superior goal difference.

Liverpool will wrap up their league campaign with a home fixture against Newcastle next Wednesday evening.

Liverpoolfc.tv man of the match: Mikel San Jose.

Hull City reserves: Tom Woodhead, Daniel East, Joe Lamplough, Nicky Featherstone, Steve Gardner (Nathan Hanley), Liam Cooper, Jamie Devitt, Tom Cairney (John Leonard), Ryan Kendall, Mark Cullen, Will Atkinson. Subs not used: Ben Hallam, Sonny Bradley, Gavan Holohan.

Liverpool reserves: Martin Hansen, Stephen Darby, Robbie Threlfall, Mikel San Jose, Godwin Antwi, Damien Plessis, Ryan Crowther, Jay Spearing, Andras Simon (Vitor Flora), Gerardo Bruna (Victor Palsson), Gary Mackay-Steven (Philipp Degen). Subs not used: Krisztian Nemeth, Deale Chamberlain.

Made up for the lads tonight, that was a good win, coming off the back of the Bolton game, they played particularly well in the second half and deserved the points.

For me Ryan Crowther was Liverpool's man of the match, I thought he played exceptionally well, glad to see Degen get a run out, he didn't do very much but he must be relieved to come off the pitch unaided  :o which is more than can be said about our poor little Jay he had to be carried off the pitch with help from the trainer and his good pal Stephen Darby.

Let's hope the lads can win their final game of the season against Newcastle next week.

      NEMETH STRIKE SECURES CUP GLORY

Paul Hassall at the Arriva Stadium 27 April 2009

Krisztian Nemeth struck a late winner as Liverpool Reserves secured the Senior Cup with a narrow 1-0 win over Waterloo Dock on Monday night.
The Hungarian striker stabbed home a close range effort on 76 minutes to give the Reds a hard-fought triumph after Jim Davies' side had fought valiantly throughout a tight contest.

The result means Liverpool have now won the trophy 33 times outright, having also shared it on five other occasions.

Gary Ablett's men may not have had the best of seasons, but they made a confident start to the proceedings and could have gone ahead after just five minutes when Nemeth wasted a good opportunity.

Waterloo responded and the dangerous Leighton McGivern almost put the underdogs in front four minutes later, but Mikel San Jose got across to make a vital last-ditch block.

It had been a lively opening from the two sides and the pattern would continue for the remainder of the first-half with chances at both ends.

Vincent Weijl's surging run almost created a goal for Nemeth before the Hungarian tested Ryan Brookfield with a low 25 yarder.

The dangerous McGivern then forced Dean Bouzanis into action after a clever turn and shot before the Liverpool County Premier League champions missed what would prove to be the chance of the half.

A good move down the right ended with a dangerous cross into the box that Dock skipper Anthony Battle somehow managed to guide wide. It was a free header from just outside the six yard box and the midfielder's anguished expression said it all.

As the first 45 came to close Liverpool gave one last warning of their quality when Dani Pacheco curled a clever free-kick inches past the right-hand post.

Ablett would have urged his side to offer more in the second period and they were first to show on 50 minutes when Gerardo Bruna saw a goalbound shot deflected just wide.

The Argentine starlet then turned provider with a sublime through ball for Nemeth, but despite rounding the keeper, the Hungarian was denied by Garry Riley's timely interception.

The Reds were looking the most creative in open play but Waterloo still had their moments and Craig Sutherland and Joe Roberts both saw their attempts blocked by Godwin Antwi.

With time running out Liverpool pressed for a winner in normal time and after Nemeth had seen his low shot brilliantly stopped by Brookfield, the striker finally broke his goal draught with the only goal of the game on 76 minutes.

A neat move involving San Jose and Bruna led to Weijl crossing low for Nemeth to stab home from six yards and win the cup for Liverpool.

Liverpoolfc.tv. Man of the Match: Krisztian Nemeth. Worked hard up front and ended his goal draught with a real poacher's goal.

Liverpool Reserves: Dean Bouzanis, Emmanuel Gomis Mendy, Stephen Darby, Mikel San Jose Dominguez, Godwin Antwi, Damien Plessis, Daniel Pacheco (Andras Simon 70), Victor Palsson, Krisztian Nemeth, Gerardo Bruna, Vincent Weijl (Steven Irwin 89). Unused subs: Martin Hansen, Daniel Ayala, Vitor Flora.

Congratulations to the Reserves on a fine bit of Silverware, not been an easy season for them after the highs of last season, so to win tonight will give them all a boost and hopefully they will take this into next season.

Haven't seen the match but I'm made up for Nemeth, as he hasn't had it easy recently.

      Well Done to you all.

      NGOG AND DEGEN BOOST RESERVES

      Steve Hunter 29 April 2009

David Ngog, Philipp Degen and Nabil El Zhar have all been named in Gary Ablett's Reserve team to face Newcastle United in their final game of the season tonight.
Appearing on the bench for the first time is Danish youth international striker Nikola Saric, a summer recruit who has been injured all season.

Ablett's side need to win the game to ensure they don't finish bottom of the Barclays Premier Reserve League North.

Good strong team that, Spearing must still be injured, he was carried off the pitch last week wasn't he?

I don't know much about Nikola Saric, so it will be interesting to see how he gets on if he gets a chance to play.

Wonder why Nemeth isn't playing/in the squad?  :-\

Maybe Nemeth will on the bench against Newcastle and Ngog will be missing out.

No Insua either, which suggests he'll be involved in the first team this weekend.

Well I'm not surprised to see Insua missing, he's kind of cemented himself now into the first team, even if it's only on the bench, I thought maybe Nemeth wasn't playing because they played on Monday, but so did quite a few of the others who are included tonight.

I would be made up to see Nemeth get a place on the bench on Sunday..........I'm sure he would be too, fingers crossed eh  ;)

That was my first thought. And anyway, there's no doubting Nemeth deserves a bit of involvement in the first team. Especially when you think how unlucky he was to get that injury which put a spanner in the works for his loan move.

Quite an attacking line up that tonight though. I'll be looking to see if Ngog and El Zhar have a big influence.
