Agger misses tomorrow's Merseyside derby clash with Everton after suffering a recurrence of a groin problem during Denmark's Euro 2012 qualifying win over Cyprus.
Hodgson has now questioned the logic of Morten Olsen playing the 25-year-old after he missed Liverpool's last two games before the international break due to similar fitness problems.
He said: “Agger missed two weeks with the injury he picked up in the Sunderland game but he made a miraculous recovery in order to go and play for Denmark where he got injured again.“I don’t know what the state of play is going to be for him yet.”
Agger fell down the defensive pecking order following Hodgson's arrival in June, behind Martin Skrtel and Jamie Carragher whilst his chances at left-back, where he occasionally played last season, were dealt a huge blow following Paul Konchesky's capture from Fulham.
Relations between the pair could now be on collision course as Hodgson seemingly overlooked the Dane's abilities when discussing Konchesky and Fernando Torres' return for the showdown clash at Goodison Park and Dirk Kuyt's latest setback.
He added: “Konchesky has made a good recovery as has Fernando Torres so all being well we can welcome those two back.
“We get two good ones back, but lose a good one in Kuyt."
