      Sub Standard Penalties
      Feb 20, 2012 03:25:16 pm
Dreading the thought of a penalty shoot out against Cardiff or in any upcoming cup game.

      2011-12

      Suarez v Sunderland home Missed
      Kuyt v Everton away Missed

Adam v West Brom away Scored
      Carroll v Chelsea away Missed
      Adam v Wigan away Missed

      Gerrard v Oldham home Scored
Gerrard v Man City away Scored
Gerrard v Man City home Scored
      Suarez v Brighton home Missed

9 Penalties this season and we've only scored 4.  Cost us, ironically, the 4 points we are behind 4th spot.

We've missed as many pens this season as we had lost in the previous 5 years.

I reckon Gerrard would score at least 3 out of every 4 penalties he got, but after him, I'd be shitting bricks.

      Does this worry anyone else?

      F***ing right I do.
Seems a long time ago now when we had the likes of Didi, Cisse and JAR.
Players you had confidence in smashing goals in under pressure.

Awful.Really awful stats.Although he missed one this season, I think Kuyt has been pretty reliable in the past.Would prefer if either Gerrard or Kuyt would take for the rest of season.Have little faith in Suarez or Adam.

Gerrard is as good as anyone from the spot. Whenever he steps up, I'd say most of us are confident of scoring.

Bit dodgy after that although I don't think we should let one bad penalty from Dirk overshadow his previous efforts from the spot. He was very good at the end of last season when Gerrard was out.

Think we have some good takers in the squad, although we've chosen poorly at times. Shouldn't have been an under pressure Carroll against Chelsea and it really shouldn't have been Suarez who's already trying too hard in front of goal right now.

Kuyt's only ever missed one for us, I'd back Adam more often than not, if I recall his miss was a decent save. It's a freak season I think and a lot of penalties have been missed across the league. I'll get more worried if it continues into next season, though it is still frustrating as hell!

If I had to pick my first five in the squad it would be:

      1. Gerrard
      2. Kuyt
      3. Adam
      4. Aurelio (won't play)
      5. Carragher

Probably agree with that. I always thought Agger would take a good pen too, technically sound, keeps his composure etc

What about Dirk? Only ever missed one, which was in the derby this season, and it was still a decent pen.

Before they came to us, Suarez and Adam were excellent pen takers. Adam was also an excellent corner taker for that matter.

I've always had the impression that we practice set pieces less than other teams. But when it comes to pens I don't think practicing them in training makes a difference. Suarez has missed twice because of the pressure, not lack of practicing them. So I'm not sure why Adam and Suarez have got worse at pens. Carroll also had a decent record didn't he?

I wasn't confident when Suarez stepped up yesterday, we just need them to start smashing it straight down the middle and stop fannying around.

Stevie you can always rely on, same with Dirk. Beyond that though, we're sketchy. I would say Adam based on his Blackpool days, but I'm not even happy with him taking corners at the moment, got no confidence in him.

Anyway, hopefully we won't be letting it get to pens, we should have it wrapped up in the 90 minutes and then we can re-claim Wembley as our Anfield South!

Think Kuyt was unlucky with his miss, was a very good save and the first one he has ever missed for us. Clear Gerrard is our best taker though. Wouldn't be as confident on a shoot out as the last few shoot outs we've had.

If I had to pick my PK takers in order of how I would send them out in a shootout it would be :

      1. Adam
      2. Agger
      3. Kuyt
      4. Gerrard
      5. Suarez

Think the confidence levels were all that was killing us. Suarez's misses he didnt once look confident, Adam was a decent pen and Kuyt unlucky...

Bad stats but I wouldnt dwell too much as long as it stops there.

      1) Gerrard
      2) Bellamy
      3) Agger
      4) Suarez
      5) Kuyt (if on the pitch)

Others who if they were on the pich Id be confident with are Carra and Henderson. Oh and Pepe  ;)

The penalty that Adam scored against WBA if my memory is correct had to be retaken ,he didn"t look to confident taking it, correct me if i"m wrong.Gerrard is the only one that gives me confidence .

Shocking stat that, hopefully we wont need them Sunday but usually I'd have Stevie first choice followed by Dirk.

      Gerrard
      Kuyt
      Adam
      Carragher
      Carroll

Think we'd do okay with that on Sunday to be honest.

No doubt Gerrard is our best taken in the past few years. Didi Hamann himself was a good one as Germans don't miss penalties!

I dread a penalty shoot out in the final.

As for Kuyt, we shouldn't let one missed penalty change our minds about his abilities as he has been reliable in the past.

Is Agger a decent penalty taker?

SG is the man to take penoes. When he's not available, for me it's Dirk. After that, not sure.

One thing though we've deffo improved is our threat from corners.

In all fairness Kuyt's penalty was well hit into the bottom corner but it was a great save from Howard

Gerrard has definately improved his penalties in the last 3 years. I feel completely confident when he steps up.
