Cantona up for five Prem awards

Manchester United legend Eric Cantona dominates the shortlists for the Premier League 20 Seasons Awards, with the Frenchman nominated in five of the 11 categories.

The awards, which mark the 20th anniversary of the inception of the Premier League, are certain to stir plenty of debate and the Best Player category is particularly hotly contested.

Cantona, who won four league titles in five seasons at Old Trafford, goes up against Dennis Bergkamp, Ryan Giggs, Thierry Henry, Roy Keane, Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Scholes, Alan Shearer, Patrick Vieira and Gianfranco Zola in the battle to be named the greatest Premier League player of the past two decades.

The shortlists were drawn up after votes from national newspapers, and the winners will be decided either by a panel or via a public vote on the Premier League's official website and announced on May 15.

Enigmatic Frenchman Cantona is also nominated for best goal, most memorable quote, best goal celebration and best striker while former Newcastle captain Shearer has four nominations and Arsenal pair Bergkamp and Henry have three each.

Southampton icon Matt Le Tissier is the only player with two nominations in the 'Best Goal' category, for spectacular efforts against Newcastle in 1993 and Blacburn in 1994.

Sir Alex Ferguson is undoubtedly favourite to win the Best Manager category, with Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho, Harry Redknapp, "The Chosen One" also nominated.

BEST PLAYER SHORTLIST: Dennis Bergkamp, Ryan Giggs, Thierry Henry, Roy Keane, Cristiano Ronaldo, Paul Scholes, Alan Shearer, Patrick Vieira and Gianfranco Zola

BEST MANAGER SHORTLIST: Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, Jose Mourinho, Harry Redknapp, "The Chosen One".

I hadn't follow the Premier League alot in the first 10 years but ... wtf? Doesn't someone like Steven Gerrard at least deserves to be there? Just because he never won a Premier League title, he gets overlooked?

Gerrard should easily be in the list and as for managers they have left out the only other manager than Ferguson, Mourinho and Wenger to actually win the damn thing.

Stupid awards anyway and as usual we are overlooked.

Scott Parker (in the PFA list) and Harry Redknapp... they could hold hands and march to hell as far as I'm concerned, it's f***in hilarious how the British media falls for these guys.

The reason Gerrard isn't in the best player in the Premier League short list is simply down to the fact he hasn't won a Premier League title.

I firmly believe Henry should win the best player in the Premier League and best striker seen in the Premier League.

Alex Ferguson probably should win the Premier League manager award simply due to his success (you cannot admit he hasn't been successful), and his longevity.

Gianfranco Zola never won a league title either but he definitely deserves to be there because he was one hell of a player. In fact, never won as many things as Gerrard even.

True, but Gerrard isn't the only great player not to make the list. Wayne Rooney could easily be on the list too, and he's won the league.

Doesn't help Gerrard's case that he's suffered so much with injuries. He hasn't played anywhere near his highest levels consistently for around 3 years.

As a friend of mine once said, the United Kingdom is a big lists&ranks wankfest, never saw a people so crazy about making rankings and being so bad at them! ;D

Gerrard out of it is a big joke, that's what it is, no debate needed.

Here's another way to look at it.

Over recent months, there has been a big debate in the media as to whether Steven Gerrard is Liverpool's greatest ever player. Journalists, managers, pundits, players past and present all had their say and almost all said that he was either the best ever or second to King Kenny.

So, as Gerrard is currently playing in the EPL and has been for some years, this 'Premier League 20 Seasons Awards' list tells us that all of those players listed, are better than any player in the history of Liverpool FC, or at least better than everyone except Kenny.

Interestingly, when the Premier League managers voted for their Team of the Decade back in May last year, Gerrard was in there.

In other words, those who actually know what the F**k they're talking about put Stevie G in their team!

Didn't expect to see Gerrard in the list to be honest, it's an English FA award and we know the FA are always sucking off United and Chelsea. Also how Jose can be included is beyond me, he was there for a couple of years and then basically got sacked.

      Fix.

"The Chosen One"?????? :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Out of they nominations in your post I would have to go with -

BEST PLAYER - Thierry Henry - The greatest I have seen play in Britain. Cantona was genius at times but he was overrated through legend status and was a dirty violent Manc tramp. Roy Keane too, see Cantona except more violent!

BEST MANAGER - You would have to say old Sir Red Nose though Arsene Wenger possible for what he did between 1996 and 2005 plus qualifying for the Champions League every season for 16 years is some record.

Interesting that no keepers appear in the nominations, surely Peter Schmeichel should be nominated at least.
