I know what narrative makes more sense to me. We go all out to buy a player in our position of highest strength or we were never interested because we don't need him.

Do you honestly, hand on heart, believe we didn't bid on him? 😊

Then they are all lying (and they being the ones that typically report reliably on all club news) because they've all said (along with some other foreign correspondents) that we were full court press to sign him....until the price proved too prohibitive.

I wouldn't say lying, just that their sources are a bit unreliable. They've got little to nothing right and are all blanket covering things. One minute a player is coming and the next they are not. One minute it's one figure and the next it's another. The club have into lockdown. No one saw the Keita deal coming until it broke when we wanted it to.

They know nothing apart from what LFC tell them, the rest is a guessing game and I can only go on what my gut says, and it says we have no interest in Lamar because we have bigger fish to fry.

Did you miss this? We DID bid on him. Klopp wanted him or we wouldn't have and if he wanted him and we bid that much...he must have thought he was pretty important.

Look if he signs, I'll welcome him in. But we don't need him so I can't see him being high on the list of priorities today of all days.

This is a lose/lose/lose for FSG here.

      1. We don't bid at all 'Why have we not bid on this player, F***ing FSG are tight arses'
      2. We have bid £70m 'F***ing more PR spin by FSG, putting in a lowball bid knowing it won't be accepted...'
      3. We get him for £90m 'F***ing FSG overpaying for players, they know nothing about football'

I'd love to be proven wrong, but I just don't think we're interested.

Because apparently they didn't want him.
not sure why, he scores a goal every 178 minutes on average. If playing full 90 minute games he would probably have a very good goal to game ratio.
Mane, Firmino, Salah, Lallana, Sturridge, Salanke and Coutinho can all do Origi's role, but Coutinho is not really a forward.

When we consider we have 6 forwards, if we go with below model we are a forward short.

      7 strikers
      7 midfielders
      8 defenders.
      3 goalkeepers

      25 man squad.

Sign Lemar or keep Origi is fine, but right now we have 6 real forwards and if we get injuries we can't do a full rotation anymore.

I don't think Lemar is world class, I think he's unproven and not even close to being worth £70m never mind £90m.

But yea there have been some weird moves in the last few years, Ox being at the top of the list. £40million is a lot of money, regardless of inflation and what have you. Sure you have the English tax that we've paid on players like Carroll and Downing in the past... But we're still spending about £15 too much on him there.

I wish we had a solid figure on how much (if any) we've bid on VvD, that would be a better indication on how much we are willing to push the boat out on proven quality compared to squad players.

      Good question.

If we signed Lemar for 90m, sold Coutinho for 140m we would have 50m extra to spend on a centre back.
Add 30m to that and offer Southampton 80m for VVD, no chance they will reject that.

      >Coutinho
      <Lemar, Van Dijk

      Title contenders.

How do you know he is going to be a squad player? Maybe Klopp has bigger plans for him. Let the guy at least play a few matches under Klopp before passing on such statements.

I would too, but we won't spend without selling I don't think. If we went out and bid 80m for Van Dijk and landed him without selling it would be great.

No thanks, I'll go ahead and make the statement now. Who's spot is he taking if you think he's not going to be a squad player?

Cause I'll be he isn't taking Can's spot, or Hendo's and I doubt he takes Lallana or Coutinho's (when they are back).

He's cover in midfield and he's cover for Salah and Mane when they need rest.

I'm not sure whether I believe they are spinning PR with their bids (although you could certainly make a case with just a small amount of tinfoil), but I will say I'm pretty confident that they don't have any issue of us having a low net spend and not having to shell out huge amounts on players. Just once I'd like to see this club just completely floor everyone by buying a player that none of us thought we could rightly get.

Our netspend is currently 40m this season, I know the pinned thread says 66m, but it is not updated with Sakho sale. I expect Markovic to go for 10m, so we may even have a net spend of 30m this window. If we end the window with Salah, Solanke, Chamberlain and Robertson for a netspend of 30m, FSG will be pleased considering our revenue generated was over 300m.

No... But incompetence must be thrown into the conversation

I'm fairly ok with the window with the obvious exception  of a cb. And as pleased as I am with sorting a Kieta deal it doesnt help us now.. so I can't get at all excited about it
