I've never understood the argument against net spend. That's how you measure investment properly. Without it, owners, in any business, could sell off all the valuable assets, rake in a load of money, then spend 10% of it and go "look, we're investing!", when actually they are asset stripping.
FSG are not asset stripping, but net spend measures this. Your measure doesn't, and is effectively meaningless.
(Deep down you know this, which is why you simultaneously make a different argument - that you only look at the quality of the players and ignore the money altogether - "fees are irrelevant" etc)
The club works to a self sufficient model - so compared to some other clubs the net spend won’t be as high
But it also never shows the full picture
The Coutinho transfer was a prime example
We sold him and then brought in two world class players - the squad actually improved significantly yet net spend was zero - so for some they would use that as a sign of the club not investing etc
What the low net spend does show is that we have sold players who are no longer needed for good prices and the money has been used to improve the squad
I can never understand why people think it’s such a crime to run that way
It’s not going to change - the club will continue to follow the same model
We won’t be always buying every single player that we need in the squad we will also supplement the squad with youth players being promoted up
People are crying out for a right back whilst we have a very good young player who has been developed though the academy - why can’t we give him a go , same with a CB
