I really don't think Todt and the FIA were looking to protect Schumacher's records. If they wanted to do that they'd have started a long time ago because he doesn't hold many now as a result of Lewis's supremacy!
Todt's been a great FIA President. When you compare him to his predecessor Mosley, it's like night and day. Gone were the days of interference, gruesome, kangaroo courting behaviour of F1 teams and in came someone who is a diplomatic master (unsurprising given how he renewed Ferrari). F1 threatened to break numerous times under the ghastly Mosley, Todt very much held it together.
So its a crying shame therefore that his tenure has ended on the most sour note. The reality is that the FIA haven't checked F1's growing obsession of entertainment over sport and ultimately became consumed by it. Its something the new President will have to be aware of and act upon.
