You've clearly got an agenda against the England team because we could have won 4-0 yesterday, but still won at any rate.

Of course he has, he's an Aussie!!

Germany will beat the crap out of england :P

No seriously, i think germany will win this game. We have our weaknesses in our defence, but one or two lucky shots from Özil or Podolski and a blunder from the English keeper will decide which team will win.

"Football is a simple game; 22 men chase a ball for 90 minutes, and at the end the Germans always win"
"Fußball ist ein Spiel, bei dem 22 Spieler hinter einem Ball herjagen und am Ende gewinnt immer Deutschland."

      5-1 to the England!!!

Remember the last competitive game the countries played against each other and even I would say this can only be a good thing for England, the bigger nations bring the best out of them.

The Huyton Hammer will do it again!

Yeah, after Germany comes Argentina, then likely Spain, and then Brazil or Holland in the final. At least, if no surprises happen, which always do happen.

If spain don't win today then they are out :o

      Amazing right?
Portugal could go out too... :o

Actually Spain can go out on goal difference even if they win. Certainly amazing.

Portugal won't go out though, Ivory Coast have to win by too many goals for that.  And Portugal not progressing through that group wouldn't have been a shocker imo, it's a hard group.

Well Ivory Coast are playing NK and they have Gervinho and Drogs up front so could be interesting to say the least.
Brazil are playing for the win and if they win by at least 3-0 then its going to be interesting.

      Anyway....back on topic.

Haha! Game not even started and there are already pages of it!

I think Germany can get through. They may not have players necessarily better than England's but they are a better team,
IMO. And, doesn't the winner of this round potentially face Argentina?

I've been dreading us coming up against Germany, not because we can't beat them but because I get so f***in tired of the war references and tabloid sausage puns whenever it happens.
      Move on, people, move on....

As for the match, England are capable of beating anybody on the day but whether they will play to their potential in this game, let alone enough games to win the World Cup is an entirely different question.
The performance against Slovenia was greatly improved from the first 2 matches but that said, Slovenia still managed to break through a couple of times and things could have been very different. Will the German forwards be so forgiving?

      Interesting stat:

England haven't beaten Germany in a MAJOR competition since 1966.

      So is the time right??

sorry if it has already been mentioned but didnt england beat germany 1-0 in euro 2000?

i believe it is a big game over there, maybe their media do not hype it up as much as ours though.

To England this is going to be big
Not sure about Germany but the old rivalry is what makes it interesting.

      I really fancy England's chances.

It's true, the rivalry doesn't exist from Germany's side, only from England's side. And indeed Holland are their big rivals.

What do people on here make of the two captains? Both were instated only shortly before the tournament.

      Have you red your ABC?

I'm trying my best to find some trivia that can be used as "lucky omens" of sorts for England in this WC.

When Spain, playing in red, won the European Championship in 2008, 44 years had passed since they last won that same trophy. Managers name: Aragonés

When Italy, NOT playing in red, won the World Cup in 1982, 44 years had passed since they last won that same trophy. Managers name: Bearzot

2010: England, perhaps playing in red, might win the World Cup. Should this be the case, it will be 44 years since they last won the same trophy.
This time managed by an Italian. His name: Capello

And for something (almost) completely different:
When Brann Bergen, playing in red, won the the Norwegian top division in 2007, 44 years had passed since they last won that same trophy.
Their captain ,Martin Andresen, played for two (unsuccessful) stints in England.

If Gerra and Fat F. can't work together, Capello should alternate between them.

In the 1970 World Cup, Italy alternated between Mazzola and Rivera. Italy got all the way to the final where they lost out to one of the great Brazilian sides ever.
In 2006 Lippi alternated between Totti and Del Piero. Italy, as we remember, won it.
Just think about Fat F. as an impact sub. Obviously you can't put Gerra on the bench, cause he would be so geared up to go, that once he'd come on, he'd go tearing into ankles and calves and shins and what not. I believe Capello is brave enough to enforce it. But will he?

On paper, England are a better team than Germany. However, i think Germany play more like a team. At the end of the day, as an Irish man, its a win-win situation for me. If England lose, happy days. If England win, then they'll go through and the country will really start to think they have a chance of winning it so their expectation will be even higher, and then they'll lose. It will be funny ;).

      And England will win.
