An abject player. Today was about fine margins, having the right players and a little more quality and we'd have won comfortably. With that in mind, Gakpo is absolutely the wrong player. Yes, I know he didn't bang in three own goals but doing absolutely nothing up front in times of desperate need is as bad as you can get for a striker. He can't do anything.... he has no pace, no intensity, no fight despite his physical presence. Whatever shooting boots he has is pointless because he's never involved.
Gakpo is a terrible indictment on letting the management have a say over signings rather than allowing the DoF to do their job. Lijnders is on record for saying he basically signed him, after today I wonder if this is the reason why FSG never even considered him as Klopp's successor. As worthwhile a reason in fairness.
It's atrocious displays like Gakpo - not just today but recently - which makes me breathe a sigh of relief that FSG are doubling down on the whole DoF structure when Klopp leaves and bringing Edwards back into the fold. Today is a perfect example of why that is needed more than ever and why the management must take the brunt for wasting good money on Gakpo.
In a very good team, players like Gakpo are the difference between winning a trophy and not winning a trophy. Sadly, he's the latter and he'll never offer anything at this club. I can only imagine Edwards and co were watching in disbelief at this performance, but also as vindication of why their DoF model needs implemented across the board.
